Fantastic. Really stirs the emotions. I can just imagine the poor fellow having to stay open late because business is bad and money's tight. I live in Hong Kong and I've tried shots like this... but mine never turn out. (I'm just a beginner!)

guess the problem is I moved to New York in March 2002, so it's a shock for me to see stands open all night. I thought this guy was just waiting for a customer :)

Works for me in either format. Slightly diffent impression from the square format perhaps because it appears more up close and personal. The original does not really give much additional information as to context or location. I'm not certain that it contributes to the isolation of the vendor or not. Ultimately I think we should respect the photographers intentions. As a side note, I see a lot of two-page magazine ads done this way with the main subject on one page and what is essentially free space on the other page. Perhaps that is so competing ads do not occupy the opposing page and not so much for artistic reasons. All I know is that it makes for an effective presentation just as it does here.

don't have the time to read all the comments, probably there is talk about cropping and lack of detail on the left side, (tomorrow I'll read them) but whatever this is a very good picture and I doubt it could be the same good picutre after too much tampering whith it. Excuse the english

Beautiful shot. And I agree with keeping the black space as it lends a sense of isolation.

Exceptionnal picture of this little shop waiting for improbable client. Although I usually prefer square format, this one tells us the story.
