Hi Pnina, I think what your detrackors are not doing is appreciate all the good qualities in this photo.....I think this is about as good as anyone can get in the situation as it is. Of course, anyone without any real talent can walk by a subject with their camera clicking off exposures as fast as their camera will fire and maybe, just maybe get a frame half this good, and when luck is on their side they think they made a pretty terrific shot.......I have done much photo judging in the last 40+ years and one thing always needs considering, that is the degree of difficulty, almost all the time......Jim

Mary, thanks !

Jose, thanks as well.

Both of you saw the DOF as significant as I saw it.

Jim, so nice of you to bring your long experience in photography and evaluation, to positive looking and writing your impressions, very much appreciated.

A nice portrait, Pnina. I think I disagree with Laurent on this one and prefer the version with more space at the top. For me it gives less importance to the glasses at the bottom, particularly the blurred one in the foreground which I see as taking to much room in the cropped version, thus becoming too much of a disturbing element. Highlights are what really bothers me with digital shooting and I don't have a solution. The harsh highlights are inevitable in such a light configuration, and you can't always double-expose or wander around with a big reflecting screen, the kinoflow, lightbox and HMI machinery ! Yet, it would have been a pity not taking advantage of such nice light as you did here.

Laurent, thanks for your nice evaluation, After cropping it, even though I agreed with the other Laurent about a bit cropping , I saw that I have cropped it too much, so I think it is in the middle of the two of you , and I have changed it with a crop, but a smaller one. Funny but I liked the strong back light in this one as it has made a good contrast IMO with the figure of the model and accentuated the outside/ inside feeling....;-)).

Laurent thanks for your good evaluation , even though some of the critiques were not favorable, I still think it is a good photo.....

Although it is not entirely successful photo (how many of THOSE are there anyway) it is an instructive one for me. I have no knowledge of the event that has connections to you beyond the picture plane so I have to look at this more compositionally. I think it is close to being something special but the fact that it has sparked so much comment certainly makes it a success in that sense alone, so there must be something there for people to react to or they'd just pass it by completely. What I like: The curve of his head and shoulder with the backlit crescent of light on the top of his head that lifts it from the background. You are fortunate that where the light is brightest he has a fringe of hair to continue the curve. The hunched shoulder also has a thread of backlight that pulls it from the background. The position of the hands and expression are excellent; they speak to me of a man who seems to be paying attention but whose thoughts are elsewhere. The background is interesting but seems somehow abrupt and I agree with most of the rest that the tilt dfoesn't really serve well here. The foreground glasses give the picture a rather intimate, unplanned feeling. Well, for a picture that is not among your best, I have certainly written a book - as Fred and Ton have done before me. Should keep you reading most of the night. Ha!

Thanks for your exptensive critique that I appreciate, As you well know ,I like a lot your work and your point of view, as well as all the others. I'm humble enough to know that not all my works are masterpieces, far from it....I still like this one despite the flaws that were found by Fred, Ton and you, and I accept all your points.

It was an important family affair, and I don't mind if it will be called a snapshot....

Thanks again Jack

Realy fine portrait here..interesting body language, strong build, he does not worry about his hair, tough, self-confident look. Reliable. Or great actor.

Great portrait. Extremly handsome and intelligent looking guy. Tension and relaxation mixed together amplified by the composition and the BG.

An outstanding image with lots of details and a touch of mistery. A sence of being there in some darkness and the busy background and the utensils and classes in for ground. All a feeling of reality that makes this image a 7/7 for me. The model looks identical to a Cuban I know, that makes the image even more real. Warm regards from Miami.
