I am only bothered by the high contrast. At least on my monitor the highlights are blown out and I can't see much feather detail even in the midtones.

The highlights and contrast look good on my monitor. You might want to use the rule of thirds on this one and not place the bird in the middle. Try placing him in the upper or lower left or right corners and see what effect the ripples have on the remainder of the picture.

Interesting picture and original due to the fact that the head is just not there like in such traditional photographs.
