Guest Guest Posted July 28, 2008 The complete painting gives us an even better view of the lovely scene, bringing the two children together at play yet each as if in their separate world (especially by the divided background) of imagination. It's so interesting to me that I see more of this painting in your color dance scenes, the one you've just uploaded as well as many others I've looked at and commented on. Of course, the color palette, subdued and earth tones, recalls your dance photography, but also what I often see as divided worlds. Much of the dance you photograph seems to divide the stage as far as action. This painting does the same, perhaps a bit less noticeably than in some of the choreography, but especially the way you've divided the background in the painting makes me think of approaches to your dance photos. You've often talked about "divided" worlds, stage and reality, etc. Here the division is both visual and emotional (as Gordon points out, the seriousness of the text on the hats vs. the playfulness of the children). The painting seems to be not only sweet and well designed but a good reflection of you. Link to comment
Donna Stavis 0 Posted July 29, 2008 I did not notice before that the eyes are like the leaves of the vines that surround and somewhat entrap the children in their fate. It's interesting that in art school, working from childhood memories, you chose to portray children playing under constant physical threat of dire attacks, particularly the devastating event you mention. With your explanation and comments, I see the photo in another light as well, as the boat is stuck in a goldfish bowl, unable to go anywhere other than where imagination allows, with the US currency a reminder of the rich American cousin, safe. I see your philosophy of viewing the glass half full but with eyes wide open. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted July 29, 2008 Fred, Thanks for looking again and writing your impression of the painting, yes, even it was painted more than 30 years ago, it is still valid. You are right that there is a division in the world reality and stage, but for me the stage and LIFE are being one, as I wrote on one of my intrepretation, titled " life as a dance" and it can be read as I interpret it , that arts/dance/theatre uses resources taken from life's reality to the province of imagination and than creation. So as I see it, it is divided/connected on the same time. My creation results were always very personal, and doing this series while in art school I was a " weird bird"....;-)) (But 2 teachers were encouraging me to continue....) Donna, thanks for your added understanding as well.I live in this reality ,which after so many years it is still a valid reality we need to deal with, and imagination is a need, refuge , a shrine for creation. I was not aware in the begining of the fact that the boat was folded with the $100 (newspaper )bill ,more to the fact of the similarity/connection of the two for me, but it is really symbolic ..... you are right.
