bretsch 0 Posted July 19, 2008 Lake Powell, Az. This is the first time I submit a B&W and a Color version of the same picture, at once......I appreciate you telling me which one do you prefer, and leaving me any comment. Thank you Link to comment
LenMarriott 9 Posted July 19, 2008 Juan Carlos, Not a critique but, as requested, an observation. I prefer this B&W version. Been looking at too many AA photos I guess. :-) This just looks more.................. Classic ! I realize this is an environmental portrait of the plant in the background and I guess it's necessary but it sure does clutter up an otherwise beautiful landscape. We'll have more of this visual pollution in the future. Better get out there now to photograph the natural beauty while there still is some to photograph. Best, LM. Link to comment
hikaru_i 0 Posted July 19, 2008 I prefer the color version. Color is nice and the relation between foreground and other area is quite clear in the color version. You might be enchanted by its color when you took it, I suppose. You had better take B&W photos with B&W equipments. Link to comment
karolostrivizas 2 Posted July 20, 2008 I prefer this b/w version Juan Carlos. Strange landscape perfectly composed with nice f/g and great depth. Beautiful rich grey tones. Link to comment
Link to comment
bretsch 0 Posted July 21, 2008 Len, thank you very much for your comment; you point something very interesting, actually the very same thing that I thought when I was there taking pictures.....This place is one of the most amazing places on earth, which makes even more striking the sight of such a building as this; the vapors coming out of it can be seen for miles around, most of the times being the only sign of humans around. Hikaru, Thank you for your kind visit and comment; I get your point, for me shooting film has far better results in B&W than digital, however I'm surprised by how much improvement has been achieved by the newest lines of different software. Karolos, I'm glad that you like this so much, it's quite a challenge to get a descent B&W of such a place and variety of colors.
pnital 36 Posted July 23, 2008 I do think as well Juan Carlos, that B/W is doing it much more justice. The colored one looks a bit oversaturated for my taste. the B/W accentuates nicely the texture of the FG and middle( good DOF), pity that the pollution is a part of that nice landscape, I don't know if it was intentional to show the contrast. but it shows it. bretsch 0 Posted July 23, 2008 Pnina, thank you for your kind comment. For me this scene was all about the contrast that came with such a spectacular landscape and the power plant in the middle of it..........it really is not so much a polluter, since those fumes are water vapor, but rather a building that is completely out of context. Cheers! Link to comment
jefvandenhoute 0 Posted July 24, 2008 I also prefer definitely the B/W version. It makes the images as a whole stronger and more convincing. Link to comment
bretsch 0 Posted July 24, 2008 Thank you Jef, I’m amazed at how the opinions so far seem to be 50/50.....that's really interesting. Anyway, thank you for your visit and comment, I really appreciate it. Link to comment

Link to comment
bretsch 0 Posted July 30, 2008 Thank you Adan, I'm glad you liked this surreal image of a most amazing and surreal place. Don Mario!!! Saludos! Link to comment
danbliss 0 Posted July 31, 2008 It is wonderful image. I like the various layers, the juxtaposition of the power plant against the rugged landscape, and the wonderful textures. Nicely done. Dan Link to comment

gordonjb 10,860 Posted July 31, 2008 The B&W works best for me. You have stated that your hope is to contrast the industrial appearance of the power plant with the natural serenity of the surroundings and I feel this is best accomplished in the absence of colour. Although the scene did contain some vibrant and interesting colours they only serve to distract. This is a fascinating landscape with so many different elements within the frame giving it a fabulous depth and feeling of vastness. Link to comment
bretsch 0 Posted July 31, 2008 Dan, Thank you for your kind comment, really appreciated. Mario, muchas gracias!!! Gordon, I see what you mean, however I'm emotionally pooled towards the color one, as it is a place that has the most incredible colors I've seen in nature, but have to admit that the contrast between landscape and surrounding is more evident in B&W. Anyway, thank you for your visit and comment. Cheers! Link to comment
vanzuk 0 Posted July 31, 2008 i prefer teh BW too. Fantastic view,as usual! and i see some angels instead of smoke. ciao Elena Link to comment
joe-tury 0 Posted August 1, 2008 Overall I prefer the b/w, but I must add that they are two different images as far as mood and feeling. This b/w does have an older look and I think better tone. Well done. Link to comment
