I think you hit the nail on the head when you said to Gordon, above:

"a visual theatre like this one ,that has no spoken language, uses more and other means of expressions, like colors, lights, shadows , clothes, movement, and other ellements" [elements]

I'm sure what you've said has a lot to do with what draws you to theatrical and dance photography, the richness of expression that it offers and the variety of elements at play. It's often a very full visual world.

I appreciate your posting the black and white version. The way I see it is not that the black and white captures the expression without the color, lights, etc. For me, it has become a different expression due to the monotone and a different feel of light. In this case, the black and white or the color wouldn't necessarily have to be better than the other, although like you I'd be inclined to go with color here. But it makes clear how much the visual expression is the combination of all the elements you're talking about. I think, rather than saying that the color and lights enhance the expression, I'd say all the elements together create the expression. In black and white, it's a different expression.

It helps me further understand my own feelings about black and white vs. color. Converting to black and white is doing more than removing color and certain kinds of light. It's creating a new canvas.

Fred I'm glad you understand my attraction to the visual arts. I think I have explained it in " All the world a stage". For me it combines human life and stage to one, as many time stage arts draws and reflects its motives, narratives, symbols, elements colors and lights( thanks for the correction...;-)) from human life( my strong feelings, also in literature and poetry, even it is not visual , only in my imagination)) around us. My fascination is combine and connect it with my feeling and life experience, and connect as well to others ,that see it and react to it. It is always so interesting to read impressions of people that don't see the whole creation, but what I chose to interprete out of it and share.

I agree with you about the B/W,It has another flavor, stripped frome the colors and becaming monochrom makes it concentrated in a way. It changes the whole atmospher, and is another way of presenting it. I like the colored stage shows, but sometimes I feel that to a certain scene only B/W will do justice....( and complete my saying)

An interesting point is that the theatre and dance groups asked me for only the colored results, it is more effective for them.....

Marco, Thanks for visiting, and liking it in color .I appreciate it as your work is mainly in B/W ....;-))

I'm glad you have connected to it, and wrote me a feedback.

Donna, nice, interesting, and right analogy of her face to a heart shape, I did not think of it till you have mentioned it. ;-))

I also love Donna's noticing the heart-shaped face.

As for the theater group generally responding to the color photos, that makes sense. I think a lot of people, especially those not working in photography, read more expression and dazzle into color work, even though I think black and white can be every bit as expressive and moving. It would be an interesting challenge, because I think the raw materials may be present here, to make a very theatrical and moving black and white version of this. I wonder if they would respond.

Below, I am posting two of my favorite old Hollywood photos by George Hurrell. He's one of the masters at making black and white sing, in my mind, in many ways more wondrously than color. Two other great photographers of the glory days of Hollywood are Von Sternberg (especially for Marlene Dietrich) and Ruth Harriet Louise. I don't know if you would have access to this book, but it's a very special one for this genre, The Art of the Great Hollywood Portrait Photographers, edited by John Kobal.

The portraits are simply wonderful, and I will look for the book as it is really interesting ( even I doubt if I will find it here or be able to order it.)

My next upload Fred, will be a B/W, and will explain even better my attitude toward the visual arts. and my life connection to it....

Thanks for the information and photographes, really enjoy looking at them

sitting down? No, than please do before reading on because you won't believe what I'm going to say. I don't care much for your b&w conversion on this one because I prefer your coloured version by a long shot. Maybe it's all been said but what I like, apart from the obvious things as that beautiful stance and expression, is that tight framing. You did very well doing that. I also think her hands need a bit of work but that's just minor stuff. I do like this one. As you've noticed Fred knows his classics (which is always a good idea). I think he would agree if I would include Hurrels portrait of Greta Garbo. I've seen a vintage print of that some ten years ago and it's mindblowingly good. You should look up some of his work. Anyway, you did good.

My good luck that I took a seat....LOL

Thanks for being flexible enough to say you like it in colors, and your kind comment.

The red gown adds to her aura of inner moment by giving it a touch of sparkle & life. Agree that the stage light helps too,

I like both the color and B&W versions, so different from each other as to be separate images. I enjoy the way the lighting, especially in the color version, give her a three-dimensional effect. Wonderful expression, wonderful captured moment, relaxed and whole on stage.

It seems people with blue in the aura live out of their hearts and their emotions and their life purpose is to serve, help and love others.:) I like the coloured version!

I just want to thank you for reminding me that the human life does not have to be filled with boredom and depression. Today's best minutes... looking at your photo.

I really like this image, Pnina. A great discussion going on there. I like the color version best, without a doubt. As you pointed out, color conveys a lot of information there.

... for me it captures the dichotomy of the performing artist. Here, she is summoning up a private moment but she is doing it with full awareness of her obligation as a performer. No matter how strong and truthful the moment, there must be some element of sharing it with the audience. I sense this in your shot and it makes it more powerful. The color version is also more evocative to me.
