root 0 Posted September 23, 2002 clean shot . . well framed - sword, hand, monument tip to edges . . . well lit on the face. monument does NOT grow out of his head . . good. Some ideas . . . his head seems low in the space. I would get even lower. there's no base, although I assume it's probably cluttered below your crop. The image could use a third element. . . your eye goes back and forth between the monument and statue . . . . Link to comment
rjacksonphoto 0 Posted September 25, 2002 I think this is framed just about right. Exposure and DOF are great. I feel, however, that I need more context, something to anchor the image. The tower is not recognizable to me as indicative of Bunker Hill (although it probably is). I guess I mean that, without your title, I have no idea of the significance of this figure or the tower. In the same vein as Carl's comment, maybe an even wider angle lens would maintain almost the same relationship between these two objects and still allow some other objects in the background or on the ground to give some contextual meaning to the image. On the other hand, it works fairly well as an abstract. Thanks for your contributions to the circle-- both comments and photos. Link to comment
jasonm 0 Posted September 25, 2002 I see what you two are saying about not having an anchor; it would look better with one. Unfortunately for, this is the limit of the camera at this angle. I had to put the camera on the ground and take a large number of pictures until I got it right. This photo has not been cropped. Link to comment
j._scott_schrader 0 Posted September 26, 2002 I think the contrasting elements work quite well here...the dark figure and the light monument, (your exposure is right on the mark to record detail in both) the very rough textures of the figure, and the smooth look of the monument and the contrast of the curves of the hiuman form played against the linear elements of the tower...all of these contrasts work together to create an effective composition. Like the previous posts, this does not say "Bunker Hill" to me. (probably because I have never had an opportunity to visit this sight) I suspect that people who have visited the sight would recognize this immediately and it probably would be indicitive of Bunker Hill to them. All in all I think your composition is excellent and although it might be improved by providing a little more context for this statue and monument you have done a good job and created an effective image regardless.
