Another shot from a recent camping trip to Eigg, this time on Astia.

Any thoughts/comments would be welcome as I am trying to get to grips

with slide film.

Thanks for taking the time.

wonderful colors, textures, light and composition. Not to mention the dramatic sky. I can't find anything to suggest to improve this shot. Regards - michel

Wonderful picture with amazing colours. Exposure is spot on. Nothing to critique on, besides a few dust spots that perhaps could be cloned out. And I believe the horizon is (very) slightly tilted.

This is a lovely capture. Well done.

I have worked with Fuji Velvia slide film for many years but have switched to digital 2 years ago. My fridge is still full of 35mm and medium format Velvia.

The thing about film is that you really have to do everything in camera and bracket your exposures. Also use ND graduated filters on the lens to balance out the light.

Good luck with the film. There are still some dedicated film workers out there but it is hard work compared to digital capture.

Best Wishes,

Bill Hogg

Many thanks to those who have commented so far.

Boeboe - thanks for spotting the tilted horizon! I'll sort it out and upload a corrected version.

William - thank you for your comments on using slide film and moving to digital. it's interesting as I am coming from the opposite position; using digital exclusively and now playing with film. One thing I have enjoyed is the colour and tonality of this medium. there is also a lot of satisfaction to be had in getting it right 'in camera' with the use of grads, and spot metering and of course using the classic hasselblad. Digital is also fantastic, and I used my DSLR when the light levels got too low for Velvia. It was a completely different way of working and I feel fortunate in being able to play with both.

thanks again, all comments much appreciated,

Ben

Stunning image and light ! I also think this would work fine ,without the 3 boulders , as well - However to they do add depth etc. john

Bloody hell man, you've picked up this MF stuff sharpish! Wonder how many years of trial and error it would have taken before digital as a classroom, and this as the real deal. Are you still photographing negatives for these posts, or are these processed prints? Either way, love this shot and everything about it...

Thanks James,

you're right about digital being an excellent way to learn the ropes. I also found the forums here really helpful in learning where to place tones such as shadows and highlights whilst using the spot meter. Most of my slides came out fine, although I think perhaps I could have tried an additional 1/2 stop at times. I tried to place my brightest highlights 1 1/2 stops above the midtone, but i think perhaps 2 stops above for very bright areas may have also worked without them burning out completely. I guess that is where bracketing comes in.

all of these images were scanned using an Epson V500.

thanks again,

Ben
