IR Tulip Close-up

gerard

This photo was taken as part of a series (in this folder). It's a red tulip taken in Ektachrome IR. Light comes from a window in a overcast day.

I made this photo as part of a personal project. It was more of a

learning experience to get to know the "secrets" of EIR. This is a

red-purple tulip taken with overcast window light. The IR revealed

the red lines on the stammen that weren't visible on the flower with

bare eyes. You can find other shoots of the same project in this

folder.

I'd like to hear your comments on the composition of this one. Is the

idea of a *nature* shot with shifted colours disturbing to you? Or do

you find interesting to see what bare eyes can't?

Exceptional!! I love it!! Two things re composition..... 1) the center of interest seems more centered that would be optimal, and 2) the bright area in the far upper right of the image draws my eye.... but ... great!!!

Very interesting shot! I agree with Dick's comments. Moving the stamen a little to the right could give a better "rule of thirds" composition and, possibly, reduce or remove the very light area now in the upper right. However, these are minor adjustments. I really like the colors and am impressed with the IR effects. The dof you are getting with the macro lens is very good. Nice job!

I agree with both the above comments on composition. I would stress more on the upper bright spot - I find that more distracting. Looking at a cropped version without the spot the image makes a nice abstact. About your question on the color - I personally am not too taken by the colors on this image. I think that may just be my preference (my idea of what colors are aesthetic) rather than the fact that the colors are not "natural". But then again my sense of aesthetics may very well be influenced by what I percieve as natural.

Hello Gerard... a lovely shot with beautifully complemented colors. Since I have no experience with infrared photography, I feel I cannot appreciate the subtle yet unique features that the film offers. I remember that you remarked that you were quite hooked on the film. Do you notice any resolution improvement by narrow-banding the spectrum? I would like to discuss the technical aspects with you off forum. Can you contact me at your convenience?

Thanks in advance.

I strongly agree with the distracting spot on the top-right. This is a cropped version of the full frame, which has a much bigger bright area.

I had doubts about cutting further down as the composition would have become much centered without justification.

I include the full-frame version to discuss if you like.

Feel free to contact me by e-mail with the questions you may have. I've been experimenting with this film for a while ('hooked' as I said before is still the right expression :-) and I'll be more than happy to discuss about it with you.

Also, if you'd like to have a look, I recently posted one of my last EIR photos: Gent in Infrared

I do like the creative nature of IR film. No issues over the use of the film in the nature realm. Composition, A-1. I do however, like the cropped and rotated version better than the verticle composition here! Just a preference. Thanks for posting it.
