David S, again , interesting to read your extensive impression.I saw in her face and pose a strong helplessness I have a second version of this, I wonder if you will read this one the same, seeing the second one, (if you see it,).

Pnina, this is one of if not the most haunting of stage images you have taken. The black and red colors and the lighting and snake looking elements come together to make me think of this woman facing a hot, dark death.

 

Interesting, I like it.

This is fantastically surreal and visually engaging. It seems like something out of Mexican director Alejandro Jodorowsky. It looks like the character is surrounded by snakes and symbolizes a Christ like figure. A martyr of some sort if you will resting against a pool of blood.

Pnina, you know very well I had to go look at the image you posted for me to see! Goodness! What an incredible difference. The second one is alarmed and alarming. Her head is up off the floor, and her mouth as open as it could possibly be... total shock, incredulous disbelief, and great tension throughout. In the first one, she is not only disembodied, but appears separated from her mind as well. In the second one, she is most certainly within herself and showing great emotional distress. I can only try to imagine the performance your images come from, but I imagine it's a very strong and moving piece of theater and dance.

Kirk,as I have explained in my answer above, it was my interpretation of women condition in some of our societies.It was isolated from a duo group show that was called " Red desert" and was about relationd between man and a woman, I tryed to give it a wider more global connotation.Thanks for expressing your impression, mine, is not necessarily yours or other viewers feeling it evokes.

 

Adan,I will search to find about Jodorowski . interesting to find your analogy. For me it represent women, as are still a prey of trafficking and murdered by men ( husbands) and by other family members " protecting the family honor"...Thanks for your personal impression.

Last week, I read a horrific article on women abducted and sold into prostitution by fathers, boyfriends, husbands and so forth. It is almost impossible for these women, stripped of their documentation, their power, and their dignity, to regain their place in the world. An unbelievable atrocity. This photo effectively conveys the experience of one being dismembered, physically and spiritually and sold off in parts.

 

Pnina, I'm glad I did not read yours and looked at this first as I see it. Your intent is conveyed very well and actually is not all that distant from how it came across to me.

 

Some of the same elements that you see to convey suffering and maybe persecution are the same elements that influenced me to think of death, which in a way, suffering and persecution are related to and often preceed death.

 

The position of the woman lying like on a cross and the spikes that resemble snakes are pretty strong religious (mostly catholic) symbols that suggest death or the loss of freedom.

Kirk, I did not know it is such a strong Christian symbolism( aside from the cross form of her laying), for me, seeing the red scene, cross form and spikes , my association was a terrible reality here and now ! in so many places on the globe, even on our border, which the police is fighting against. It IS the death of many women spirite, passing that unhuman traumatic experience.

Pnina, you're right, the cross is Catholic. Also, the preachings of Catholic are of red fire and brimstone where you soul is damned to the devil who is usually always depicted red in a red fiery surrounding, even by non-catholics.

Thanks, I learned about Christianity symbols, but the nuances are important as well. many interpretations and feelings are possible, observing ellements composing a photo. if it touches the viewer to respond , it serves its purpose .
