jbrand 0 Posted September 13, 2002 I nearly stepped on this butterfly as it was sunning itself in the middle of the sidewalk on a cool day. It blends nicely with the background! Does the lack of contrast between the butterfly and its surroundings spoil the impact of this shot? Link to comment
akbar 0 Posted September 13, 2002 I like the shot overall. I don't think the background takes away from the moth - I think that is part of the appeal of this image. There is an overall lack of contrast in the photo - was it taken in the shade of on overcast day? I wonder if just a touch of fill flash might have corrected that - at the same time using flash with the kind of background you have, that is very close to the subject, can result in a harsh, over prominent background. Maybe some additional light with a diffuser or reflector? The moth itself is very pretty - did you get some close ups of just the moth? You shot this at an angle from the ground - from the way the ground goes out of focus on the top of the frame. Was that intentional? If you had shot straight down, parallel to the ground, the plane of focus would be parallel to the ground and your subject and the whole frame would have been in focus. Right now it looks like some of the moth - the head and antennae, are out of focus. Link to comment
tony_k. 0 Posted September 21, 2002 Hi John...I very much like the photo. I think that the background plays well with the subject. Also I understand that it's very difficult with a fleeting subject to frame and focus, or to measure lighting ratios, placement, etc. Having said that, once the shot has been made and we're certain of at least the image we initially wanted, alternative positions could have been considered.
