On each of your shots bring it in closer to the subject without the additional background. I tried to fix them in photoshop do add a little more drama but there is very little definition in the surfer. Make your camera focus on him and throw the rest out of focus. Depth of field is very important in good photography.

Doug,

This is a technically fine shot. It looks tack sharp and you have caught a nice moment with the spray off the cutback. Your horizon is even level which is not the sign of a beginner. Nice job and keep it up. I look forward to your shots next winter when Rincon is pumping from a double-overhead west swell! Aloha.

Thanks guys.

Dallas, I think I may be at the physical limitation of my location on the beach to where the break is to get more detail in the surfers face with my setup. I had to crop quiet a bit i this one to get what you are seeing. I completely understand about going to a faster stop. I have been stoping down a bit as I learn and get my timing right so at least I come home with more in focus good shots than throw aways. As I get better I plan on going faster and getting better depth of field on my shots but for now I am going to stay around F8 to get what I am looking for.

Thanks again for you comments guys.

Also there is more in the face but it's kind of hard to pull detail out of a 1meg jpg over my original 36 meg raw shot. I am going to start playing around with the images you guys reviewed and see how close I can get them.

Hi Doug,

I like this one out of the series you posted. I like the stop action and the detail in the water. I've been taking kayaking shots recently and understand the dificulty of getting good detail in the water. Exposure must be right on or the detail is lost. I'd like to see the raw image for comparison sake. One of the difficulties I have with the kayak photos is if you expose to get facial expressions, you tend to overexpose the water as the kayaker's face is shaded somewhat by the helmet. It looks as though this surfer's face was a bit backlit and I think it would be tough (other than photoshop) to get the detail in the face.
