Zabriskie Point, Death Valley National Park

This is an experiment with Photoshop. The original of this was so black at the top of the ridge that you couldn't distinguish any of the texture, so I played with it and came up with this. What would you recommend doing differently?

Ughh! I see now that this almost has a purplish cast to it.....and that's certainly not the way it was. I just love this rock formation, but I seem to be making it worse instead of better! Any help would be most appreciated!

Cristal - if you want, email me the original file and if I have some time this weekend, I'll work with the color.

For what it's worth, I don't mind the color - it may be purplish in the back, but the front is not so ... which tells me that the whole image doesn't really have a "purple-ish cast". In fact, the colors in the foreground look VERY natural, and the colors beyond look like the wonderful things you see in the American West that are surreal. I was going to comment that I really like the textures in this image. :-)

The texture and light are lovely. The purple did not look out of place to me at all, as the desert is full of amazing color. Nice picture!

Thank you for your positive feedback on this! Yes, I know the desert can have some amazing colors. Yet at least on my monitor this looks too purplish. I just finished a Photoshop Class and am having fun trying some of the new techniques I've learned. Birte, I'll check out the sponge tool....thanks for the suggestion.

in fact! Cuaght my eye even as a small thumbnail. I think it looks real because the yellows in front say "this pic is not off colour" and I like the contrast between the two complementaries very much. Were the yellows even more yellow in reality?

Just a thought if it is still not looking as you feel it should - is your monitor calibrated?

A superb capture and a wonderful scene. There is so much 'eye candy' in terms of light, colors, textures, shapes, forms. This part of the world is on my list but already I feel intimidated by the daunting task of capturing something that most people have not already done since it is such an iconic scene.

All the very best and keep up the very good work.
