Cynthia,  I was looking through my own portfolio and found a nice comment you made quite a while ago, so I thought I would look at your work.  Here you posted a request for help and no one answered.  Let me do it for you now.

I have made an exposure adjustment to your image using Adobe Raw (CS3).  There are several such pieces of software and they all do about the same thing.  Please notice that I overprinted two Histograms - maps of where the pixils are.  Probably your camera provides a histogram that you can look at immediately after taking a picture.  Notice the histogram of your original.  The horizontal line of the graph stands for the different tones - white on the right and black on the left.  In the histogram of your original you will see there are hardly any pixils to the right (the light tones).  If you saw this on the back of your camera you would give the picture more exposure by going to a brighter f/stop setting or on some camera setting an override control.  Here I simply redistributed your pixils using software, usually good enough but never as good as having the original exposure correct.  Should you need more explanation feel free to email me giving the URL of this picture so I know where to find it again.
