On my one brief visit to Bryce I discovered what a challenging place it is to photograph. We arrived rather late in the day and rushed up to "Sunset Point", only to discover that, facing east, Bryce is a sunrise spot and not a sunset spot. As can be seen here, where the sunlit areas are a bit blown out (because it is still probably a couple of hours before true sunset) while the shaded areas are too dark to reveal the fascinating beauty of these hoodoos; a few minutes later and the whole scene will be shaded. So in a situation like this the best thing might be to wait for that last bit of direct sunlight on even a very small part of the scene, allowing a longer exposure to bring out more detail.
