malzati 0 Posted June 13, 2008 Hello Catherine, your photo reminded me of the work of a girl that was in my photography class several years ago. She did this whole series on carousel horses and toy horses. It was quite interesting because she was always playing with the unreal/real quality these horses had. In many of her photos the carousel horses appeared to be very dramatic thanks to the lighting and framing. This is definitively a subject you can play around with. What I would answer to your doubt about how to classify an image would be in two directions. One would be to ask yourself what is your intention with the image or images your creating. What are you trying to say, or show with them? I divide my work in different categories. I have my commercial work which is not necessarily art (though it could be), even though I'm trying to please a customer I try to give my commercial work my personal touch. Then I have the photos I take because I want to experiment with a certain subject, technique or lighting. Many times out of this comes esthetically pleasing images which could be called fine art but that was not my intention when I made them. For me what makes something art is that which is saying something, that which is making me question my view or thought on something, that which makes me feel, deconstruct and question myself in some way. Beyond the fact that the photo might be beautiful it must also have a profounder effect. Well this was the longest answer I have ever given on photo.net. I hope it is useful in some way.
