ericc22 0 Posted September 7, 2002 Greetings, All comments on this are most appreciated! I know I lost detail behind the boat but I am not sure how to capture that without blowing out the white of the boat and clouds. Thanks! Eric Link to comment
ericc22 0 Posted September 7, 2002 Thanks for the comments Bart. I agree with your assessment about the trees. How can you tell the sky is blown out? Because definition in the clouds is lost? Most importantly, how would you avoid this problem? I would think that the only way to get more highlight in the trees is to darken the boat? Is this a problem that should be fixed in Photoshop? Thanks for all suggestions! Eric Link to comment
tonys 0 Posted September 8, 2002 I looked at your shot in the large format and I even tried to play with it in software. I think that the composition and framing is problematic in your picture. You wanted to show both the details of the white boat and the beautiful background, which has very high contrasting areas. As you can see this is impossible. I either think you should have concentrated on the boat or on the whole picture from a different angle with better light distribution. The high-end digital cameras give you the option to see a histogram of the picture before you shoot. Judging by the histogram such framing mistakes are easily avoidable. I sometimes wonder if the desire of an amateur photographer to become a pro is not simply a desire to own sophisticated photographic gear, which the professionals usually do. I doubt you can correct this in PS without major alterations to the photo, which is a little bit of cheating in my opinion. Link to comment
brian l. schiele 0 Posted September 9, 2002 I happen to agree with Anton... THis photograph is too busy, there are just too many boats in the foreground which affects the compostion. Had the second boat not been there, I think the photograph would have been better. Link to comment
rsminton 0 Posted September 10, 2002 Sounds like Bart is on to something there. A darker, more contrasy sky would help balance the image, but you did an excellent job capturing the boat, dock and that impossibly blue water. Nice work! Link to comment
brad 0 Posted September 12, 2002 I like this one overall. The lines on the sailboat are amazing. The sky might be burned in a bit. And the focus of the image seems to be the boat number right now, the significance of which might have been lessened by a slightly different angle...a few steps to the left, or would that put you in the drink?
