neciphoto 0 Posted May 19, 2008 I would suggest looking at the large to get a feel for the detail. They are fast flyers and I was pleased to get a series of shots I liked the wing pose here with a bit of movement near the tips and detail further up. The oily sheen of the feathers creates some interesting colours. Although it is a bit of an ugly bird. One of the most difficult for me anyway to get the exposure right they often end up as a silouette. Spot metering with some compensation of trial and error. Thanks for any comments and rating. knobby6 1 Posted May 20, 2008 Excellent shot. Again I find it remarkable that you get that clarity with the 2x tc. No way u could get that with nikons 2x tc's. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted May 20, 2008 Thats what i wonder , is how to get better results using this 2x extender , have you looked at the new cannon 800 mm lens ? We are going to add either that lens or the cannon f2.8 400 Mm ..I am leaning more towards the new 800 mm at 9.8 lbs it would not be a burden to lug around and from reviews works very well with the 2x extender ... Either way this image is a fine one great capture and ill let you know which lens we add as youll soon see the results Jeff Link to comment
neciphoto 0 Posted May 20, 2008 Hello Jeffrey If you think about it a 2x with a 300mm f2.8 prime is still at F5.6 and being a prime has good resolution to start with. It is a lens which is pin sharp at f2.8 putting a 2x on anything above f2.8 is a waste of time for AF speed or even a zoom lens for that matter. the 70-200mm f2.8 wide open is not sharp and as soon as you push it further with a 2x it will loose quality even further. I like the sound of the 800mm or the 400mm f2.8 but for BIF you will struggle unless you use a wimberly and tripod. The 300mm is just light enough to handhold for BIF, with a 1.4 on it 420mm f4 is fine and tack sharp. elportebonheur 0 Posted May 20, 2008 This is an extraordinary inflight capture, Necip. Compliments and thank you very much for your detailed explanations on the lens subject. Very helpful hints. Best regards, El Link to comment
knobby6 1 Posted May 21, 2008 Although, I don't shoot canon, what Necip says is right on the money. For bif"s your only other good choice would be the 500 F4 which is considerably heavier than the 300, but still managable. I know several people that hand hold the 500 with excellent results. Guest Guest Posted May 21, 2008 thank you for the detailed and specific info i really appreate it , I only wish they made a 200-800 zoom F1.2 lens ,I dont know the techinical aspects of why they dont make it now but in that range with a 1.4 extender it would work perfectly for low lite in flight shots as well as low lite action sports shots ...SO we all need to petition cannon until we get a lens like this ... :-) thanks alot I will let you know which we end up going with ,but to me the 800 at 9.2 lbs + the new CS3 raw image processing software ill have with this i think i could still make up for the lessor amont of lite ....I am thinking of renting each lens for a week to test drive and see which works best for me ,I found a place that will rent a photographer any type lens they want ...makes it so you can see which you like best ...thanks again Jeff Link to comment
