Shirley's Cupboard

Part of an attempt to capture the spirit of a woman who led a solitary life. I

was struck by the nature of her small house when I went to help empty it,

and decided to create a portrait of her by photographing what she left

great bw. just an observation: if i look at the pic after have read your words, i can understand, but the photo, alone, i dont see Shirley. maybe if there was something more personal, i dont know, the glasses, or anused knife...

Very sharp photo. But, I don't think it personalizes the woman. I'd have made no connection if I hadn't read the text first

This is wonderful. I think I like this one better then the bed table and clock. There is something about a cupboard that seems so personal. Thanks so much for sharing - Lex

I agree that there is nothing in particular in this photo to give any sense of the woman by itself, but it is part of a series of 15 images or so that hope to paint the whole portrait. The only part of the image that ties it to the others is the contact paper coming off the side of the cupboard - everything in the house seemed older and a little tired. Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate the opinions of photographers not attached to a particular photo emotionally -

Of course it's personal. All choices -- including what soup you buy, how you organize canned goods, and what pattern you pick for your shelf liner -- are personal. I'm sure this series will create a moving sense of who she was. I think it's a fine idea, one of the best I've heard about in a long time. Warm regards, Joe
