tapole 0 Posted August 30, 2002 hmm... Looks familiar. That's it, it's the arch on my National Parks Pass :). I like the nice contrast in the foreground and the background. However, I find the slight shadow in the foreground to be a little distracting. I think the shot might be better if the shadows at the bottom were cropped away. Link to comment
mike_mcbride 0 Posted August 30, 2002 Thanks for the comments. The shadow is a little distracting, but I overlooked it in favor of the crop I liked best. Perhaps a little more crop wouldn't hurt, though. Link to comment
timothy_hawkes 0 Posted September 6, 2002 Mike, This is a nice shot of a very nice subject, but you'll have to excuse me for using it as a spring board for a broader comment on nature photography. The fact is, this is one of the most photographed subjects on the planet. You have done a good job of going there and recording it, and the rain clouds are a nice touch. But the bar is raised significantly when you tackle something so familiar. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't take pictures of Delicate Arch, only that it's awfully hard to impress when it's been done so well so many times by so many others. So, my reaction is something like "nice." Yawn. To get more than a yawn for a picture of Delicate Arch, you have to show something extraordinary--unique lighting, perspective, etc.--something that communicates more than simply records. Even so, you now have a very lovely shot of Delicate Arch all your own, which is more than most people can say. Best regards, Tim Hawkes Link to comment
mike_mcbride 0 Posted September 6, 2002 Tim, Thanks for the comment and I agree. I almost didn't submit it because it is so photographed, but it is an interesting experiment to see what gets noticed and what does not. Interestingly, I submitted another photo I took at the same time from the same spot, but looking a different direction. That other photo is the first in my landscape folder and was submitted a week prior to this. I like the other one better, because while everyone else was busy with delicate arch, I found a picture I really like and I didn't see anyone else point their camera in that direction. I was a bit surprised, though, that that photo has had no rankings or comments. Still, I like it. Link to comment
