Just a shot I took when my friend and I were on vacation. This was

my first time ever using slide film, and I had it cross processed at

work. I tried to fix the skin tones (compare this to the other shot

in my cross processing folder), but I didn't have much time, so it's

still a bit off. Anyway, I think it's a cool effect and adds

something to an otherwise boring picture.

I can see what you mean about the skin tones, but I don't they're that far off overall. I like the photo a lot. It nicely conveys the mood and quiet of the subject. Nice work.

I think I like the other one more. This just makes me think that it was a bad snapshot. The other one makes it look as if it were a decision on the photographers part to change the skin tones, this one looks more like it was supposed to be a normal shot that went wrong. And I definatly like the cropping on the other shot more as well.

I think that in my small photographic "career" I have only cross processed 3 rolls of Sensia 100. I think you either should cross process a roll if you had the effect in mind while making the photo, so intentionally or if you think the roll you shot has such boring photos that cross processing might make them slightly more interesting because of the funky colours. The latter usually isnt a solution to make photos interesting for IMO the composition, expression etc. are more important then the colours to make a photo succesfull.

This is a so-so portrait. She is beautifull so makes for a nice subject to photograph, her expression and lovely face compensate a bit for the lack of creative input such as angle and composition. Its a keeper for sure, but for some reason I have the impression the cross processing was thought off after the photo was made or you just thought I'm going to try out cross processing but didnt think of what kind of ambiance or theme would fit this kind of technique.

I'm not trying to sound harsh or anything :-) I just try to explain that if you think of a good purpose for the effect of cross processing it might have more effect then just funky colours being funky colours, but more funky colours creating the ambiance more.

Hope this made sense :-) by the way, I have a number of cross processed portraits in my portfolio, trying to accentuate/create a slightly gothic ambiance.

Oh and by the way, with cross processing you will probably never be able to get the skin tones right, but thats the whole idea of cross processing!

I also have to agree that the other photo in this folder is better. In this one her head is too close to being centered leaving it feeling static. I feel the cross-processing leaves colors that fit the mood of the expression of the model. An interesting technique.

I'm absolutely ignorant as what cross-processing means. Did you process the slides as C-41?

I do like the other photo better as for the pose, but in both the yellow tones on a dark green background are too strange for me, and I think that this one is the better lit of both (specially how well and evenly lit her face is). The only real problem I see (besides the funky tones) are those distracting windows on the background - even though out of focus, they're still much too prominent.

I would have liked to see the second image, lit as this one, and without the yellowish tones.

Ricardo - yup, slides were processed in C-41 chemistry. This shot was printed with +3 red and +3 blue to get her skin tones a bit closer to normal; I didn't have time to fuss with the other shot. Although "boring", I liked this one better because the shadows/creases from her underarms bug me in the other. And with the house in the background a bit, this one reminds me of my vacation. :)

Try Kodak E100S - should give you more a yellow/orange skin than sensia (sensia isn`t good enough even for cross processing).

The picture:

- ever heard of the "portrait" orientation?

- distracting background

- definitely weird colours, the cross process was not used for a creative mean because the girl, the pose the setting is so ordinary - why the funky colors?

Repeat the lesson!

Sorry, it tells me nothing. The model is attractive, but it seems she's "just there". If it has emotional value to you, it is not transmitted through the composition nor the colors.

i like the image and the cross-proccessing (try doing that with digital folks-no can do) but i think i would prefer this image if it was shot vertical instead. i find myself curous to see more of her body and the cropping off of her arms seems slightly odd.

The model, my friend Genevieve, thought it is a cool effect and wants to do it again (this time we'll take more care in terms of posing/backgrounds/lighting, etc.). She's a good sport about my torturing her with the camera. :)
