Sunrise Scan From my last Print

peterneibert

I took this image with my digital camera after a very long time standing above the Gate in the fog, wind and darkness of an October morning last year. Then I lost it when my hard drive died (yes, I know, always back up everything). All I had left was an inkjet proof print on 10 cent matte paper. Recently, I upgraded my scanner to an Epson 2450 and tested it to make the scan shown here. So, I have my image of the Golden Gate Bridge back now as a digital file. I think it is a bit enhanced over the lost original, possibly because the scan seems to have picked up some texture from the matte paper interaction with the ink.
October 19th: Scanned again higher resolution and stronger contrast; saved for web at quality index 45

Very nice photograph. It is framed very well. The negative space on the left may be a bit too much, but I don't think you can have this image without it. Sorry to hear about your images, had that happen to me with some ditigal photographs of my first and so far only trip to Europe. I saved the hard drive, however, and a year later was able to retrieve them with some new software.

While trying to reproduce this recovered image, I find that it has never had the benefit of your incisive critique.
Looking forward to your comments,

Peter, I am sorry for your loss. What was the Epson 2450 setting when you scanned this print? Unless the proof print was pretty bad, the 2450 should get much higher quality image than this. I like my 2450 very much for what it can do within its limitation. I can image how contrast it was when the sun hit the fog bank. It can be very critical to get a good exposure for this type of shot. If you are going back to re-scan this, try to add a bit more contrast. Good luck.

Stephen,

Thanks for the Scanning pointer.

I have just scanned it again at higher resolution and stronger contrast. I'm not sure whether this rework meets your standards, but it is clearly an improvement over the prior version.

Thanks again,
