squiver 0 Posted June 1, 2008 Japanese Crane, or Red Crowned Crane (Grus Japonensis), walking in the shallow water of a misty river in Japan. The fairy tale like trees are covered in hoarfrost. It was very cold (-28C) but the beautiful view was worth the pain. The Japanese Crane is a large crane and is the second rarest crane in the world. In East Asia it is known as a symbol of luck and fidelity. When it matures, the crane is snow white with a patch of red skin on its head. This patch of skin becomes bright red when the crane becomes angry or excited. You can't see it in this image, but I will post one later where you can. The estimated population of the species is only 1,500 in the wild, making it one of the most endangered species of bird. Although it is supposed to be against 'the rules', I deliberately framed the shot so that the crane is walking out of the image, as I like the tension it creates.
