The story here is of four kids who rode the fair. I like this shot very much. Your image is simple and direct. Well done.

I love it. Long exposures work for me. Using Tri-X is what made this shot work. It would not have been effective in color--the bikes would have blended in and ground would have appeared blotchy instead of a more uniform grey.

As a print, I might recommend a softer grade of paper to allow for reduced contrast in the rides, but as a digital image you might tweak it a bit to see if you can bring out more sharpness in the moving lights. But that's all I'd recommend trying. Otherwise this is great!

I agree with Valeriu about the background exposure, but I see another problem here. The angle is straight on and quite flay imo. I'd say that the great shot was somewhere in there with maybe a single bicycle - do we need more ? - a lot nearer to the fun fair, and a smart angle. This is a good idea that ends up a bit boring visually for me. No "fun" in this fun fair basically... Regards.

So, What would you have me do? MOVE these kid's bikes? It TELLS A STORY..The kids jumped off their bikes for a night of fun at the fair. (I saw them do it!) Like Lee Iacoca would say "If you see a better picture, TAKE IT!" I took it and YOUR idea was boring..

I have to agree with Ed. I could still tell the story even without looking at the title of the photograph, in fact I did. This photograph is GREAT.

This absolutely conveys a story. I recognize the amusement rides without an assist from the title. I can also relate to the excitement from the days when I rode my bike to the carnival when it came to town.

This wasn't just an attempt at taking a photo for art's sake, I was on assignment for the Saginaw News at the time, and, like in golf, photojournalists have to "Play the ball as it lies" I could've gotten fired for moving one of the bikes. Reality is always more interesting than setups. Ever see one of those ads with a "Kid" being portrayed having his baseball hat on kinda backwards, hair askew, goofy sunglasses on, and his clothes rumpled just so..it never moves anybody!! It looks like a hokey Sears catalog clothing pitch or something. Reality and honesty rules. Thanks for your nice comments!
