colin_y 0 Posted August 19, 2002 Thanks to those who critiqued the first two versions. This one wouldn't be here without you. colin Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted August 20, 2002 This image works well in monochrome, but I bet it would be fantastic with the right colors. It is just classic. Somehow I am reminded of the great late Emmet Kelly, and wonder if this is a pose he often struck as a child. To me, even with no makup, the image says Circus Clown, and I like it very much indeed. pschoen 0 Posted August 22, 2002 This image is so perfectly exposed -- the tones are beautiful. So clear. And I love all the space at the top -- as if giving the boy room to grow, or think, or wish and dream. Wonderful. Link to comment
kent_southwell 0 Posted August 23, 2002 This makes me think right away of Elliot Erwitt's style of shooting. This photo has a great spirit. It's a really great photo. Link to comment
jillmyers 0 Posted August 27, 2002 Amazing image! I love the expression, composition, lighting, everything! Link to comment

jodie coston 0 Posted September 8, 2002 Wonderful portfolio. I can't believe I haven't seen it before. Each image is amazing, full of great tones and textures, while capturing amazing mood. Link to comment
marie_delorage 0 Posted February 7, 2003 This is my favorite image of yours. I would agree with Marc that it seems like a "perfect" shot. Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted May 5, 2003 I can't stand this term "negative space," but I like this portrait. What an expression! But I'm uncomfortable with the gray area at the bottom that looks like paper fog. Link to comment
wind.dk 0 Posted May 5, 2003 Golden section, yum yum :) Btw, I too dislike the term "negative space" which usually translates simply to "space" or (as in this case looking at the subject matter, not the tonal ranges) "empty space". There's nothing negative about it, but it is used to good effect here. Link to comment
mmmee 0 Posted May 5, 2003 I look at this way. errr well, much like the child does. He is looking up into that negative space. It has to be there. He is just so bored. The contrast, light, composition is all so very well done. Congratulations on your choice as POW, Colin. Are you ready for this? Link to comment
johnsloan 0 Posted May 5, 2003 The expression in this childs face is priceless. I can almost hear it now, "come on dad, are we done yet?". I like the space above the head, but may have cut just a little out. Wonderful lighting and tonal range. The gray fog around the little guy are his legs if I'm not mistaken. I believe he is wearing sweatpants and has his legs criss crossed under him. Link to comment
umd 0 Posted May 5, 2003 Still looking at to see some uniqueness in the expression and technical qualities that make it stand out from casual portraits, but I fail to see. Another not so worthy pow for me. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted May 5, 2003 I love the way you continually portray the different characters of your son. Its joyfull! regards Craig Link to comment
navarra 0 Posted May 5, 2003 This is an excellent portrait. I like the light and the expression of the boy. I like te composition as well. I like some other pictures in this same folder much more than this, but still congratulations on a well executed work. Simone Link to comment
robin_betts 0 Posted May 5, 2003 I've always understood 'negative space' to mean something a bit more specific; an area of ground whose shape and weight make it act on a composition as if it were figure. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted May 5, 2003 Great posture. Someone says that the silence which follows a Mozart concert still belongs to Mozart; I would humbly add that the space (I would not comment on choice of words for qualifying it, negative/empty or whatever - anyway english is not my mother tongue).. still belongs to this picture and more specifically to this boy contemplation. Great choice for POW; Some comment made link to E.Erwitt, I would say can by E.Boubat style as well. Link to comment
bob_pictaker 1 Posted May 5, 2003 I'm not usually very fond of kid portraits from a photographic point of view. I love kids as a species but I find most portraits of them rely on the cute-ness factor for their success. While this young man is very cute, this is also a very solid portrait. The expression is great, and the composition is wonderful. The lighting is simple but well handled and the tones look very good on my monitor. Link to comment
jordan2240 89 Posted May 5, 2003 Colin, I echo all of the previous postive comments regarding this photo, but admittedly like some of the other shots in your portfolio better because they have a more spontaneous feel (just a matter of personal taste). Regarding this particular shot, I'm curious as to what improvements were made over the first two versions. Are you referring to things done solely in the development process, or was the shot actually retaken? Congrats on POW. Bill Link to comment
