Mark It

He's marking the 2x4 with a nail to cut it. Last few minutes of work as the sun begins to set.

I have looked at this image several times now and while I certainly don't dislike it, I'm afraid that it doesn't do much for me, either. I guess that, for reasons unknown to me, I'm sort of ambivalent about it as a stand-alone image. As part of a series -- for instance, combined with the photo you posted for critique earlier -- it would probably work much better.

That said, my only technical criticism is that what I assume to be the subject of the photo -- hands scribing the 2x4 -- are too much in shadow. My eyes are drawn to the bright spot next to them but there's nothing of interest for them to see once they land there.

Jeff's spot on. The light tells us where to go, and it should be the square or the hands and everything else should be dark. But keep trying, because shots like these can be very dramatic if you can get the beam of like to fall right where you want it.

I would agree with the both previous posters. The light should illuminate the main subject. It is a spotlight effect that you have working in this image, and that spotlight efect can produce some of the most dramatic images,...unfortunately it is working against you in this particular image instead of working for you.

I wish I could add something the Jeffrey's comments, but frankly, I can't. Lots of dramatic potential, but the light simply wasn't right for you. Too bad.

Has this image been changed? I just came back to look at it again and it looks quite a bit brighter overall and the highlighted area looks ... well, less highlighted. Hmmm...

If it changes again perhaps the bright spot between the hands will go away.

I think it would still be best in the direction everyone else has been saying to go.

Hallo Peter. What is important? The hands, or the right part of the picture? I should say, give the hands more light. Regards, Henk

Must be your crazy eyes, Jeffrey. I haven't touched it. Thanks everyone, I had mostly the same thoughts about this one. The RVP transparency is pretty nice to look at when it's backlit, a lot more detail comes out of the shadow - but this is lacking somewhat.
