It's called shootin' through a zillion rolls of film and praying to God Almighty that one turns out! :^D As you know, it's all about magical lighting, and as you can see from many of my pics, I take plenty of shots in lousy lighting but upload them anyway! Since I don't use much in the way of filters (other than the occassional GND's to balance harsh light/shadows), I rely a lot on just being out enjoying the wilderness with my camera and snappin' plenty of shots when the light turns magical. Thanks for the nice words!

FYI... on this shot I used the only GND I had at the time, which was a 3-stop hard. I lined it up with the obvious shadow. It wasn't the filter to use, but it's all I had on me. It darkened the mountains too much. There was just a strip of light in the middle, shadows in front and behind. The GND brand was a Singh-Ray. These mountains already have a reddish tint to them, so the hard 3-stop really seemed to bring it out. Thanks for the comments!

I guess what we see as purple snow and blue shadows (rocks in the foreground) is the the combination of cool color temperature in the shadows, intense UV/blue light in the High Sierra and high contrast and saturation of Provia F. I had exactly the same thing happening with Provia when taking pictures there. Except for the Grad-ND effect (which is overdone IMHO) I will testify that things look like that up there and it's beautiful !
