"The Haunted Tree"

david_julian2

This image reveals my love for nature and my quest for nature's "darker beauty". Years ago I dreamt a vision similar to this one, and I had hoped to someday see it happen in my viewfinder. One day, while on a vacation that turned rainy, I just drove around with my gear. This tree was one of several in a row at an orchard's edge. After gaining permission from the orchard's owner, I patiently tried many camera angles that would compose the tree as i wanted. I deliberately ignored the technique often taught "to compose off-center", as I wanted this tree to evoke a very deliberate power in my image. That said, I also had to avoid capturing the neighboring trees at frame's edge. it started to drizzle, and I thought I had better 'bag' my camera to protect the lens. When the birds flocked into the orchard to rest and noisily socialize, they flocked from tree to tree until, as my hopes would have it, they landed in the tree I was focused upon. Careful not to allow rain into my lens, I unbagged and shot several frames, but the birds took flight as I did so, and you now see the result. Pure serendipity aided by envisioning the "dream" years prior. And yes, my lens did get wet. It is part of a series about Trees. This kind of "emotional seeing" is what I teach my workshop participants. I have sold this print as an 20x24" IRIS on Somerset Velvet, and as an archival Epson print onto Arches Ivory 300lb paper. Yes, it is available inquire, and specify size (of mat) desired. See more at http://www.davidjulian.com

I am really drawn to this image. I don't usually find myself gravitating toward B&W images, but this certainly is an exception. I love everything about it! Congrats on a great image!

I admire of you style. It is very good examples of using of photography for surealistic expression of the dreams. I try to create the images which can express my dreams too. You can see my works at my portfolio "Nature Fantasy" in this site. I think it will be interesting for you. Thank you for beauty.

I didn't think I would give any picture a perfect 10 but this is such a great exposure. Nice tree with a lot of interesting detail. And the location of the birds are just perfect.

The comoposition is exquisit. Sort of reminds me of something out of a haunted movie. The birds are in a great rotation near the tree. Very great shot.

This wonderful pictures proves once again that a good image is not about following the rules. It is about "seeing". Putting the tree dead center makes this a stronger picture than it would have been otherwise.

I really like this. I think the faded edge works to add to the tension and moodiness of the scene.

Love the border and the way the birds surrounded the tree. This is one shot that I will keep coming back to look at. Great job!

I've always love this kind of trees, reminds me the time when I was in Australia, walking along this long stretch of road with these trees on both sides during winter...juz so cool..! I love this pix..

What a picture !! I didn't even know it had been POW, but I truely believe it deserved it ! I feel almost guilty for not giving a double ten here, but maybe I shall just explain why... I feel you did perfectly fine choosing to have the tree in the center. It nows opposes the quiet atmosphere and the birds leaving the center dynamically. Brilliant ! But as I looked at it longer and longer, I thought that to complete this effect, maybe a squared composition would have worked even better since it would make the tree a center horizontally AND VERTICALLY. On the top of that, a squared compositon would have enhanced the feeling of peace and therefore made us feel even more the dynamic opposition to the birds' escape !

Of course, there might have been something unpleasant at the bottom, and maybe it was impossible to include what was there, but I'm curious to know what you feel about this little suggestion.

Anyway, fabulous picture !

Sincere congratulations.
