Well, this is my first request. :) This is among my most recent attempts. This

was my favorite of the roll, at least initially. The one thing I'm not happy about

is the intrusion of the wall in the lower right foreground, but I couldn't lean out

any farther. :)

Thanks for any comments you may have.

I could have sworn, looking at the thumbnail, that you had somehow done a composit to make this look like there're two faces (kissing each other, but upside down) then my eyes focused, and I could see that this was a single picture. Interesting what our eyes can do to us. The nearest rock that is out of focus and cuts diag across the lower right, is a bit distracting, you might just want to clone/crop it out. Or if you have the luxury reshoot a bit higher ;)

I think the strongest point of this photo is the almsost symmetry you've shown. Interesting :)

I love this scene. It seems very serene and peaceful. I would like to see some of your other shots from the trip...

Critique -

What is in focus?? I can see some of the rocks on the right seem to be in focus. Then some of the rocks on the near left are really washed and blury, almost like you were moving...

To me, there is just not enough contrast in the scene to make this a good black and white image. Whether it is the print/scan or what... I think there is just too much neutral grey color. Makes the water look murky... This would have been better in color.

Regards,

The actual photo is a lot sharper than the electronic version. My scanner is fairly poor, as it turns out, and introduces a ton of noise - by the time I despeckle and then unsharp mask (which is all I do to the B&W scans) it just seems kind of overall fuzzy. This is an ongoing problem with all my stuff that I'm not sure can be solved without shelling out a lot of $$ for a good film scanner.

Contrast-wise, the original is less washed out but I think your critique probably still applies. Thanks for the comments!

I like the subject. As previously commented on, the railing in the lower right is very distracting. Nice attempt though. I experienced many similar situations when trying to get a shot. I have to applaud you on your sense of self preservation - I generally do not exercise such caution myself - you will probably live longer than I will :-)

Also, along the lines of similar comments I would like to see more focus and more contrast. If this is indeed a scanner issue you are not alone. I also have issues with my scanner. No matter how much I tweak it, it seems that the image always seems somewhat washed out in the highlights. They also always loose some definition in the shadows which, from what I understand of scanner technology, is to be expected.

Have you tried sharpening the origional scan as well as possibly adjusting the contrast/brightness??

the image is lacking in contrast, is unsharp throughout and the composition really isn't that intersesting though its a cool subject...

I think the focus is off a little here, but I really like this. I don't really like the surface in the bottom right though, I don't think it adds. I also think while there is a highlight and shadow I think there is just too much gray here. But Nice work. By the way the oringinal is stronger than the changed version posted above, there the highlights are too washed out and the midtones are shot, and you can tell it was photoshopped.
