orion 0 Posted August 11, 2002 The picture was made in Mali (West Africa)after the end of the traditional market in Djenne. Many people were returning to their homes in the evening. They often have to go another 5-7 hours to their villages. Link to comment
alex marsaud 0 Posted August 11, 2002 Terrific Shot! I can feel the silent exhaustion from hard work (great position of this old lady (?) slightly bended over with her head down, smoking the pipe), with the sun still burning hot, and @ the same time the momentum that will keep them working day after day. david_wilcock 0 Posted August 14, 2002 i have to admit, i am a sucker for taking silhouettes, but... visually it is hard to get away from their inherently cliched nature, and in Jpeg they look like a craft paper cut-out pictures. Link to comment
brooks_leffler 0 Posted August 15, 2002 Great picture! The empty net/cage, the drooping head and pipe, the dangling sandals -- and rubber tires on the wagon. A great example of storytelling with a single shot. Congratulations! Link to comment
josef_philipp 0 Posted August 17, 2002 Pepi, this picture is great. Technical perfectly executed and best of all it tells a story! Link to comment
bozovic 0 Posted August 19, 2002 Nice details like the pipe, cage or the hanging head. I think I wider shot could also do a bit more. It's fine for me there are to few emotions. Link to comment
steviewander 0 Posted September 1, 2002 Joseph, I would love to know some of the technical info used in making this image. Are you using a tripod? What were the weather conditions (it looks to be a hazy sunset)? Was there any exposure compensation? Bracketed? Etc, etc. Anything you could offer would be helpful. Phenomenal photograph. orion 0 Posted September 2, 2002 I dont know all the details, because the photo was made about 7 years ago. Yes, I used a tripod, I was standing in a muddy spot below a dam, that connects the town of Djenne with the surrounding countryside. People were going back from the market to their home villages in the late afternoon. The sun is going down very fast in those southern countries and the sky is hazy from the sand of the Sahara (the Sahel Zone is getting drier each year). Shutter speed was about 1/250 and F=16, no compensation, measured by matrix of the camera. The most difficult thing was, that there were so many people going, that you had only seldom the chance to get a single carriage or group of persons. Link to comment
miguelangelhoyas 0 Posted September 5, 2002 Congratulations!! You have catched a great moment, with a great light. The moment of leaving the work to get back home, when your mind is totally empty, resting... I feel this sensation on the photo. Really great! Link to comment
