jeff smith 0 Posted February 9, 2008 Very interesting photo.. I cant tell if it is looking up hill at the sky... or down hill at a body of water.. Great shot Link to comment
michaelj 0 Posted February 9, 2008 Really nice capture. I like the simplicity of this. My only critique is to crop out the the item sticking up at the bottom left. Maybe kick up the levels/curves a tad-bit. Nice job. peace out - - - michael j Link to comment
ricardo navarro 0 Posted February 10, 2008 Thank you, Jeff. I always liked the intriguing element about the background in this picture: is it the sky or water, as you surmised, or perhaps a wall or something? It is actually the sea, rendered like this because of the extremely diffuse lighting and the ISO400 film's grain. It can already be clearly recognized in the above b&w version, taken just a few minutes later, when weather had cleared up a bit, with my Leica CL, 90mm Elmar, and the sharper and contrastier T-Max 400 film. ricardo navarro 0 Posted February 10, 2008 I agree about the intruding item (actually a raised sewer access). I finally decided not to crop it out because the image then started to look a bit cramped to me (little "air" for the lampposts), but perhaps it is actually not so and the trade-off is worthwhile ... As for the brightness, I can tell you that the scene looked exactly like this (extremely dull day), as does the original slide, exposed as per incident light metering. But I suppose that in a case like this one could choose to brighten it up a bit to try and make it a little more lively, so well noted, and see above: better? Thank you very much for your kind and constructive comment. Regards. Link to comment
michaelj 0 Posted February 10, 2008 I think it looks better after crop. I really like this picture. To me it tells a story - who is he? why is he alone? where is he going? Where has he been? Thanks for sharing. peace out michaelj Link to comment
ricardo navarro 0 Posted February 11, 2008 Ok then, Michael, amended! Thanks again, and best regards. Link to comment
ricardo navarro 0 Posted February 21, 2008 And for anybody wondering about the "intruder", please see above the original post. Link to comment
carsten_ranke 0 Posted February 23, 2008 Well seen and composed. Slightly brighter is better, IMO. I tried a mirror, and like to "read it" from left to right. For the photographer, however, such manipulations are hard to accept since he has the real scene in mind - am I right ? Link to comment
ricardo navarro 0 Posted February 26, 2008 Indeed I have the real scene in mind, Carsten, but more importantly I got used to the photo's orientation, so now I find myself squinting at its reverse, my brain trying to bring it back "where it belongs"! :) Interesting what you say, since actually they say that we all "read" images from left to right, but I do not know whether this is exactly so or, if it is, whether this particular shot "reads" better one way or the other. Regards. Link to comment
carsten_ranke 0 Posted February 26, 2008 The left-to-right theory must not be true. But it is a nice exercise from time to time if you make such "mirrors". Link to comment
