40d is a great camera but 50mm is not really the best choice for indoor sport. I think you need a telephoto with f:2.8 with a usm. or if you wanna do something diffrent use a 10-20 and have the whole thing!

I tried taking photos of a basketball game this week for the first time as well and I also have a 40d with a telephoto you can check out what I have done...

good luck..

Actually, I think a 50mm is a pretty good choice for shooting the action close to the net. I tend to use an 85 or my 70-200, but that's mostly to cover more of the court. Nothing wrong at all with making the most of what you have, and if you're shooting ambient, which you look to be doing, fast is good.

As far as this shot goes, I think I'd like to see more to the right, maybe more centered between the shooter and the defender. But overall your timing is good, the exposure looks dead-on, and you have captured some of the effort and emotion of the game.

Kirt Winter: What an honor to have you comment on one of my photos. I'm a fan of yours. I remember asking you questions about a baseball shot of yours almost 2 years ago. Thanks for stopping by....I agree with everything you said about this one. I've only been shooting basketball for a month. I'm getting better but it is very hard to get everything right. The action is so fast. I remember you told me to practice looking through the camera with my right eye and following the action with my left. I've been doing that and it has really helped me get more keepers. My first basketball shoot a month ago produced 2-3 keepers out of 75. Now I'm up to maybe 50 out of 150. Thanks again for stopping. Take care.
