dougityb 0 Posted August 2, 2002 What kind of fogging treatment did you do here? It came out well. I'm not crazy about the silos, or whatever those columns are in the background. Is that why you did the fog? If so, it was a good idea. Framing them out makes the shot very narrow, which works after a fashion, but as background elements they have a great balancing effect which is lost in a skinny crop. Link to comment
mclaine 0 Posted August 2, 2002 Yesterday morning was very foggy, and I stopped in here on my way to work, mainly to record some B&W versions of Tamar Yacht Basin, in my Coastal Folder. The silos are of local historical significance, belonging to a colonial water-mill long since decommissioned, and now a National Trust relic. I'm lucky enough to have a 2 hour E6 lab close by, so I picked the film up at lunch and posted this one same day! I did no adjustment in PS, except to desaturate the border and clone out some dust and a small aerial at the top of the mast. Cheers, Link to comment
MichaelChang 12 Posted August 3, 2002 Hi John, thought I'd check in to see if you had anything new, and what a treat! You consistancy in creating quality images is wonderful; I wish it came to me as easily. The reason I gave a pair of 9's is because you constantly outdo yourself, and it also just makes me look dumb to rate everything 10s in your folder, even if they are deserving. Link to comment
a_talug 0 Posted August 3, 2002 Hey, where's the mast on the red sailboat? I'm a sailor, things like this scare me and cause me to lose sleep....;-) Link to comment
suzanne_berry 0 Posted August 4, 2002 This is one of the best "foggy" photos I've seen on here!! Seems the fog always winds up either grainy or blurry, this is close to perfect. The little red boat catches your eye right away ... Great shot!! Link to comment
gandyjs 0 Posted August 7, 2002 Wonderful fog! Wonderful reflections. Wish I was there barefoot, walking along, drinking fresh coffee.... Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted August 7, 2002 Holy Smokes! Look at those ratings! John, it's time to quit your day job. The desaturated borders made me think the whole image was subjected to a darkroom fogging technique because it looks like the fog extends beyond the image area and into the border. It's very effective. Link to comment
mg 0 Posted August 8, 2002 I have a problem with what Doug mentionned: the darkness going out on the frame. Otherwise it's neat, but 10 in originality is a real joke imho. A good shot, yes, but still over-rated... No offense meant here, just an honest opinion. Regards. Link to comment
mclaine 0 Posted August 8, 2002 I feel you're probably right on the 10's, but hey, don't discourage everyone, I'm lapping up those 10's! Everyone needs a little positive reinforcement from time to time......... On the border, it was just an idea I tried, to make the image fade off into the edges. Cheers, Link to comment
will_wilson 0 Posted August 8, 2002 The technique here is excellent, and I do like the overall feel of the picture. But it just reminds me of a bad pre-framed painting or watercolor. It just doesn't venture out enough for me. Link to comment
scott bulger 0 Posted August 8, 2002 ...that the first comment out of someones keyboard was to ask what type of photoshop treatment was used. This is the fundamental problem with digitally enhancing images. It degrades the images that are done with camera skill. This is a beautiful image. Well done. Link to comment
george_vincent 0 Posted August 9, 2002 Let's see. Here's what I don't like...............can't think of a thing to criticize. The framing/composition is as good as it gets. The red boat and silos provide a pleasing yet not overpowering color contrast. The effect of the fog is beautiful. The shadow, or should I say foggy detail provides plenty to look at over and over. Fine, boats have been done a million times, but it doesn't detract from the quality of this photo. Arguably the best amongst a high quality portfolio. Link to comment
jacoangeli 0 Posted August 9, 2002 really good with the fog, the hue, the light and the composition that are perfect! Link to comment
jim_white1 0 Posted August 24, 2002 Very nice. Good composition and a thickness of color that only Velvia can seem to give. Nice mood to it. Link to comment
margaret_s. 0 Posted September 28, 2002 Absolutely fantastic, can't take my eyes off of this photograph. It's almost surreal. Would've been curious to see the effect with less depth of field, to blur out the silos a little... not that I dislike them mind you. Link to comment
miles_hecker 0 Posted October 3, 2002 This image has lovely monochromatic color harmony, wonderful tonal balance and good composition. The only tiny flaw IMO is the lack of breathing room for the bottom reflection of the mast. A tiny bit more would have been better. Link to comment
navarra 0 Posted January 11, 2003 I really like many of the images in your portfolio, and this one is really excellent. Link to comment
brett_cole 0 Posted February 12, 2003 great photo. the composition is too tight at the bottom- makes you feel uneasy in an otherwise soothing image. Link to comment
