Haifoss little sister, Iceland.

gerard

This was a little stream that more often than not, gets overlooked by the impact of it's big brother Haífoss (high waterfall) that falls just a few meters to the left. (See "Haifoss" in this folder to see it's impressing size). Nevertheless, I found this smaller stream to have more interesting shapes and spent most of the time at this location figuring out a good framing for it.

Well it caught my eye. I'd have liked to see more of what's in the upper part of the photo. The rocks are lovely helped by the composition. The colour is a bit OTT, I'm not too sure about these extra colour films.

Early in June I went to Iceland for my first serious go at landscape photography. We had pretty nasty weather but I managed to get some shots. This one is one of my favorites.

It's the river that starts a little waterfall next to the big Haifoss (the highest in Iceland).

All of the group but me ran for the tall guy but I spent most of my time exploring this small and, in my opinion, much nicer one. I didn't have previous landscape experience and I worked mostly from a mix of theory and instinct. I would like your feedback on this one, good points and things to improve. I'm specially interested in your opinion about the composition.-regards,

I like the image but find the clutter at the bottom a little distracting. The rock in the foreground with all the different colored lichen and moss is deinitely interesting and I can understand why you included all of it. The image also seems a little dark. What do you think of my PS version - I cropped out the bottom, lightened and added a little more contrast. I would have liked to have seen a little more of what was above - maybe from a higher perspective to see more of the stream. Good shot all the same.

Sorry the image attachment didn't work. I tried a second time to no avail. Maybe there is a bug in the image attachment service with the comments, though it could be that I am doing something wrong.

I agree with the comment about wanting to see more of the upper part of the image. I, too, find the rock fascinating, and I hope you spent some time just focusing on that aspect. I think I might crop the bottom about 1/4th of the way up, retaining the smooth portion of the foreground rock. I'd then add more of the stream and it's environs. Of course, there may not be to much more without bringing sky into the image, so the photographer knows best!!! Interesting image!!

Gerard, I agree with the comments made by others. My first thought was that either the top third or the bottom third should be cropped out. The colors and textures of the rock in the foreground are interesting enough to be the subject of a photo with no other background. The top 2/3 is also a good picture, but it would be nice to see more of the falls. In the present cropping the rock holds too much of my interest, making it, and not the falls, the subject of the shot! I like the colors.

On further study, I really like the sweeping line that starts with the falls and continues in the major, lichen-filled fissure in the foreground rock!

I can see why you were interested in this area! I've never thought of Iceland as a place I'd want to photograph until seeing this picture!

Nice shot!

This is a most beautiful composition. I think what makes it beautiful is the use of the clear, colorful boulder in the foreground as a frame that defines the stream below. The stream, in my opinion, remains the subject of the photo.

I'd have to add my voice in agreement with the critique that if either the foreground was the subject or the back ground it would be a better photo. I'd also like to add, maybe it's my screen, but the green seems a little washed out. The colors seems a little dull to me. Is it a factor of the sky, time of day, film used, filters? Or any number of combinations of other things? Might be something to think of the next time! Thanks for sharing!

Well...I'm sometimes pleasantly surprised when the photo caption hints at the subject, but this time you have shocked me. I was expecting a vivid macro and get a very interesting landscape.

I like the choice of foreground. The lichens are beautiful with their subtle coloration and support the tundra-like setting of the image.

The photograph reminds me of Alaska...above the treeline...waiting for caribou.

The shutter speed is right on and the choice of vertical format with extreme DOF makes it for me.

Good photo. I would have moved it up a little though, less of the bottom and more of the top. But that's just me.
