Someone else used the term " soulless " and that sums up this image nicely for me. Every aspect of the photo is adequate, the lighting, the composition, the utilization of the reflection , but adequate doesn't really move me in any way.

As becomes apparent from the number of people showing off their dried leaves on this thread , the leaf itself is hardly an original idea. The reflection as well is an over used idea. So much so that you can buy photoshop plug-ins to do it for you if you don't have the patience to set it up in the studio.

If a photographer is going to tackle a concept this common, there has to be something about the image to set it apart. I am not seeing anything which accomplishes that goal with this image. Both the idea and the result strike me as unoriginal, which makes this an unfortunate choice to showcase from Leszek's portfolio since he does have some quite original work within his folders. I am particularly fond of some of Leszek's bent glass still life photos. I don't think this image needs more punch but it does need a bit of soul.

First of all I would like to thank that my photo was chosen as POW. Everyone sees this picture in his own different way. Thank you very much that you stop here and write your opinions. It is very import ant for me to find out, what can be changed to do the picture be better.

I wish you a Merry Christmas, many gifts from Santa Claus and a Happy New Year.

Regards Leszek Kobusinski.

While photographing a leaf may not be very original the end result is original because we all see things differently. And let us not forget why most of us use this site--to learn and improve. I agree that constructive criticism is a good thing, but comments like "no soul" or "doesn't move me" are very counterproductive and a little insulting IMO. On the other hand, since most of us use computers and software, I think tips on cropping and post processing are something we can all appreciate and put to good use. Photography is like music, what moves one person does nothing for another.

It is not a Transcendental photo just something nice, i hope it isn´t a PS work, i rest lot of value when photos are manipulated, otherwise the photo transmit some kind of relax looking at it

Andrew;

So it is productive to offer technical advice in this forum but it is counterproductive to offer impressions of how one relates emotionally or aesthetically to the image , how very odd. In that case the crop is too tight at the bottom. Is that more to your liking ?

Hello

Pls add my comment as well. Thank you :)

Goes without saying - it`s really beautiful picture!

But I have one question:

Leszek, how could you get this picture? I mean is the leave on the water? If yes, so it`s your perfect ability that one cannot feel water`s existence here.

(Maybe u have explained - but I have not read all the comments, sorry)

Would love 2 hear your answer

Regards,

From Azerbaijan

If photoshop is going to be used for the shadows, then the transitions should be smooth and not show the evidence of tool use (as is obvious on the right side at the horizon).

For me it is just too much time spent on a rather ordinary leaf.
The conundrum of studio work is that with so much removed in the sense of the natural world, the more must be revealed of the subject to make up for that.
The great joy of photographing outside is that there is so much randomness that can just as suddenly become a compelling composition.
I hope more to find art than to make art. The endless adventure of it. I leave home with one thing in mind and return with everything but what I went for. The seasons, weather, time of day all play a part in lighting the stage. Even a familiar road can have a wonderfully different look when any of these natural elements come into play.
So the antiseptic atmosphere of the studio removes more that it gives, and the leaf it seems gave its all some time last week.

Well, i will base my critisism on Photonet questions.Regardless if this is a mirror reflection or a digital add-on it works fine.Actually if this is an effect it's an exquisite, artistic interference. The exposure is very accurate and the whole scene seems floating on empty. As about the framing i would prefer a 4/3 ratio than close to square.Excellent photo Leszek.Merry Christmas to all of you.
