I am always a sucker for bridge shots, and this is a great double portrait of two spans. I love the older and more staid bridge in the background, with its post an lintle style construction. Functional and straight-forward in it's design and execution. Contrasting with it is the more exhuberant and newer span, that gets a running start before making a grand leap across the channel in it's graceful arch. All of the elements of the image further enhance these basic forms. The long and slashing diagonals cutting across the frame add to the motion of the leaping span, as does the light that strikes the important part of the bridge and the focal point of the image. The darkness at the right of the image, where the older span is eclipsed by the newer span, gives us the feeling that it's day is over - modern steel has won over as it draws our eyes toward the light and the future. Great shot - very well composed and subtle use of color -
