Taken at the July 2002 World Superbike / AMA Superbike races at

Laguna Seca, California. Photo was taken handheld with a Canon EOS

D30, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L and a 1.4x teleconverter while balancing on

a tipped over trash can to shoot over a fence.

Nice shot in a good background and well frozen in time and space.

Maybe a little suggestion would be to give him a little more room in the cropping department. Especially a little room in front of the bike to provide more balance.

This is an excellent example of following a moving object to get a crisp picture of the subject while blurring the surroundings to show the speed of movement.

Nice photo, you need a little less light on the subject.Check your sun angles before you shoot there. This looks ;ike it was shot at midday when the sun is at its highest which makes for blown out highlights. The other alternative is to use a polariser on the shot. Nice angle and centering of the rider.

Mr. Doran,

While your comment about the light situation is valid technical advice, I don't think it applies so well here. I can see from your photos that you have been around tracks a great deal, so you know you don't get to pick-and-choose the time of day a race is held, nor can you pick what the weather will be like, and in many cases you don't get a choice of where you can set up for a good shot. IMO, Cecil was at the right place (the inside of a turn) at the right time and created a great shot, especially considering his trash can balancing act.

FWIW, I'm the pseudo-official photographer for the Peachtree Chapter of the BMW Car Club of America, so I'm pretty familiar with racetrack settings. (chapter gallery here)

While I totally agree with Shawn's observation that sometimes, you get what you get when you're given it (this was the only time I was able to get this shot), I also had the same reaction as Mike. After coming home and looking at the photos, I realized that a polarizer would have probably helped take some of the glare out of the situation and maybe even help with a bit of color saturation. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, eh! Will try and keep that in my thought process in the future!

Thanks guys for the suggestions and comments!

Great shot Cecil... I really cant say much bad about it except i dont like the angle... I would have tried to move down the track some, or just try to click the shutter a bit sooner to get more of the top/front versus the top/rear how the shot turned out... Its always more exciting to get a semi frontal bike shot than a rear/back shot...

Ahh.. who cares.. its a great shot.. and the exposure isnt bad for a DigiCanon.. ;)
