Jeez. A guy goes away for a few days and this is what he returns to....

Excellent. I feel just a little less Scrooge-like or Grinch-like in looking at this creation. We're having a heat wave of 40 degree weather, so I'm feeling a little less surly.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas with warm thoughts and a creative 2008.

I'm glad you finally got a chance to see this. I've been wanting to do a birdhouse shot ever since I saw yours but didn't know how to get my idea across. I shot this last Saturday with my new telephoto lens, replaced the pole , and used my new found technique. Did you know that there is a new invention in ps called"brushes"? ha! Thanks for all your support and feedback and looking forward to sharing ideas in 2008! Merry Christmas!

For you only, I will tell you the "secret". Here is the original photo. I used the watercolor effect in photoshop, brush detail to maximum .Replaced the pole with a stump that I had a picture of and cloned out the sign.I did a little burning around the edges to try to blend the shadows in. For vignetting. make a new layer above the original, paint it solid black, use the rectagular marquee tool and set feather to at least 20,draw a rectangle in the middle and hit delete. For scratch effects, I used various "grunge" brushes and stamped shapes over the entire image. You can find brushes at the links on my bio page. I have started making my own using old textures and my intuos 3 tablet. You can find many tutorials on the internet on how to do this. Good luck and Happy New Year!

Awesome work, Joseph! And a huge thanks for explaining how you do this. Of course, there's still the "little" part of artistic vision, which we'll have to come up with on our own! Have a great 2008!
