Partial solar eclipse as seen in Sydney (Australia) on the afternoon

of December 4th, 2002. Smoke from a bushfire gives the rich colours

(unmanipulated). The plane is taking off from Sydney's Kingsford-Smith

airport (Resubmit).

Neil, I'd say you're off to a helluva start here on PN. A most serendipitous confluence of events, and you had the savvy to see it coming. Not many of us will have this opportunity in our lifetimes. A truly extraordinary shot.Keep up the good work.Regards, Bernie

An excellent shot. It's a great capture of the moment.

Indeed you were at the right place at the right time! Congratulation, Elena

Neil, I had to give this photo a 7/7. This is clearly a once in a lifetime shot you got and you nailed it right on. This is a very publishable image. Of course with digital techniques these days such an image could be constructed entirely from one's imagination and that makes real, unaltered, breath taking images like yours seem more common place. Nevertheless, I think you should endeavor to find a publisher for this image.

Thank you everyone for your comments.

Frank, I did make a bit of an investigation to publish but couldn't generate any interest - I've since given up on that idea...

Neil, I'm glad to see your name and came to see if there is some photo of yours here...

This is a strong image! The light and shadow is special and the whole is very original, the colors are adding to the dramatic scene.Unusual.

Thank you Pnina. Colours are not enhanced, but as it was. Some jpeg artifacts are visible here but not in the original. Thanks for looking!

I think confluence is the right word. The sun, the eclipse, the plane, the smoke... the odds are incredible! Your stars really aligned for this one. This shot would be amazing without any one of the elements, but with all four it's almost unbelievable. Congratulations! I find it hard to believe that someone would not be interested in this photo. I bet any airline would love to have this shot. Either way this is incredible!

Thanks Charlie :)

Maybe my self-promotion is below par, but I did enquire with Nat. Geo (I think it was them - they wouldn't consider a single image, wanted a portfolio). Oh well...
