paula grenside 0 Posted December 15, 2007 Very effective simplicity in this winter shot. Link to comment
markonestudios 4 Posted December 17, 2007 Howdy Susan :) This image is really really lovely. I miss winters just for photo opportunities like these. Here in sunny Kenya the only place where there's snow is on Mount Kenya, about 17,000 feet above sea level ;) And you can be sure you won't find a scene like this one way up there!Best regards,Mark :] Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted December 18, 2007 And a big "Ho Ho Ho" to you too Sky! I had to "frame" this up just right 'cause Shawn likes his trees "whole". Thanks Jeff, the "Three Graces" is another perfect title, far better than my mediocre one. I love their strong graphic lines against the soft smudged background. Hello Huy, I appreciate your visit. I've been trying to do more B&W and this image, although shot in color, was already very monochromatic. Greetings Andrea, "simple is as simple does".....I've never understood that expression. But it is the simplicity of the composition that is so appealing for me. Nice to have a visitor from Kenya Mark, you may lack snow but you've got some interesting trees in your part of the world, and Mount Kenya is a much photographed scene. Link to comment
amalsircar 2 Posted December 18, 2007 White Christmas! Very good composition and soft focus,Susan. Wish you Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year. Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted December 18, 2007 Thanks A.K., I wish I could say the "soft focus" was a well thought out idea but it was just luck, a handheld P&S camera and a very foggy day rendered the soft background and focusing on the trees made them stand out. Link to comment
jcpopper 0 Posted December 20, 2007 Since you've not posted a new image, I'm visiting this one again -- to praise it once more and to wish you a Merry Christmas. Regards, Joe Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted December 20, 2007 Thank you Joseph, and a big "Ho Ho Ho" to you and yours. This is an appropriate image for the holiday, I've had several other name suggestions but maybe this is "The Three Wise Men"! Link to comment
gordonjb 10,860 Posted December 20, 2007 Strong, stark and very wintery. This leaves me with a lovely melancholy feel ( I actually enjoy feeling melancholy at times ). I like the fact that the foreground is such a light grey , the background hills and trees a more middle grey and the sky an in between grey. All of these tones above middle grey really do a terrific job of setting off the dark tones in those three trees. Happy holidays and all the best in the new year to you and yours. Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted December 21, 2007 I thought I was the only person that actually liked the feeling of melancholy....for some reason this photo resonates with me on a deep level, evoking feelings of renewal and survival. It was pure luck that I got the wonderful tones, due in part to the fog. And a "Merry Ho Ho Ho" to you and yours. Link to comment
williammccarey 0 Posted December 30, 2007 Ansel Adams would have been proud to have this shot in his portfolio. Beauty, dynamic range, great contrast. Frame it like a gallery print and you got a money shot. 7/7 Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted December 30, 2007 The irony here William is that I shot this with a meager Point and Shoot camera! It printed up nicely. Thanks for the visit. Link to comment
williammccarey 0 Posted December 31, 2007 A great shot depends not on the camera but on the person holding it. q.e.d. ps: I'm now a California ranch owner, near Tres Pinos. 40 head of cattle wandering around and organic olive trees going in next year (I said it was a California ranch!). Guest Guest Posted December 31, 2007 Susan, I think these little p&s cameras are vastly underappreciated. Have you noticed what a wide-angle this one has? I love that. Of course I would stick up for p&s cameras, since that's basically all I have:) I love this image! I too was struck by the hight key effect (which I love). Beautiful work! Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted December 31, 2007 Congratulations William on the new ranch! The first real cowboys, the Vaquero's, originated in California, and they set the standard for fine Horsemanship and the handling of cattle. Now about those Olive trees..... Welcome back Kim, you've been missed. I'm getting lazy about using my Canon and tripod 'cause I'm always packing around my little P&S. Link to comment
