"Three Winter Trees"

Very effective simplicity in this winter shot.

Howdy Susan :) This image is really really lovely. I miss winters just for photo opportunities like these. Here in sunny Kenya the only place where there's snow is on Mount Kenya, about 17,000 feet above sea level ;) And you can be sure you won't find a scene like this one way up there!

Thanks Jeff, the "Three Graces" is another perfect title, far better than my mediocre one. I love their strong graphic lines against the soft smudged background.

 

Hello Huy, I appreciate your visit. I've been trying to do more B&W and this image, although shot in color, was already very monochromatic.

 

Greetings Andrea, "simple is as simple does".....I've never understood that expression. But it is the simplicity of the composition that is so appealing for me.

 

Nice to have a visitor from Kenya Mark, you may lack snow but you've got some interesting trees in your part of the world, and Mount Kenya is a much photographed scene.

Thanks A.K., I wish I could say the "soft focus" was a well thought out idea but it was just luck, a handheld P&S camera and a very foggy day rendered the soft background and focusing on the trees made them stand out.

Thank you Joseph, and a big "Ho Ho Ho" to you and yours. This is an appropriate image for the holiday, I've had several other name suggestions but maybe this is "The Three Wise Men"!

Strong, stark and very wintery.This leaves me with a lovely melancholy feel ( I actually enjoy feeling melancholy at times ). I like the fact that the foreground is such a light grey , the background hills and trees a more middle grey and the sky an in between grey. All of these tones above middle grey really do a terrific job of setting off the dark tones in those three trees.

I thought I was the only person that actually liked the feeling of melancholy....for some reason this photo resonates with me on a deep level, evoking feelings of renewal and survival. It was pure luck that I got the wonderful tones, due in part to the fog. And a "Merry Ho Ho Ho" to you and yours.

Ansel Adams would have been proud to have this shot in his portfolio. Beauty, dynamic range, great contrast. Frame it like a gallery print and you got a money shot. 7/7

The irony here William is that I shot this with a meager Point and Shoot camera! It printed up nicely. Thanks for the visit.

A great shot depends not on the camera but on the person holding it. q.e.d.

 

ps: I'm now a California ranch owner, near Tres Pinos. 40 head of cattle wandering around and organic olive trees going in next year (I said it was a California ranch!).

Susan, I think these little p&s cameras are vastly underappreciated. Have you noticed what a wide-angle this one has? I love that. Of course I would stick up for p&s cameras, since that's basically all I have:) I love this image! I too was struck by the hight key effect (which I love). Beautiful work!

Congratulations William on the new ranch! The first real cowboys, the Vaquero's, originated in California, and they set the standard for fine Horsemanship and the handling of cattle. Now about those Olive trees.....
