well i was ready to call lewis lang just another cliché himself, the creative and talented artist type who feels the need to take on the affectations of a smug, hipper than thou, thoroughly obnoxious asshole... but instead, after seeing this picture incongruously tossed into the mix of his other shots: http://members.aol.com/Lewisvisn3/wem4jday.jpg i'll instead just wonder if he looks at himself as a hypocrite? (wonder, because he's promised not to reply. he will stick to that won't he?) i mean can an objective person find anyway not to apply all of his comments (and more) on the picture at hand to his that shot of his?

i might add that n. ahmad seems to be one of the few non-assholes around right now (and others who made similar comments but who i'm too lazy to reread and give credit to)

"Colonialism is dead and buried, matey, but had it not taken place, the worlds people would still be bickering about which berries are better for curing raw-meat induced diarrhoea..." -- Samuel Dilworth

Mr Dilworth, your perception of pre-British India is ridiculous beyond belief.

"The following is my subjective impression of the scene. A middle-aged man, physically aged a little beyond his years, is struggling to maintain a sense of dignity in a place that has lost all dignity. His poise is that of a person making a last stand, superficially brave, but obviously insecure nevertheless. He is not impervious to his surroundings, as evidenced by the self-mocking twitch of his lip. Although he wants to feel proud of his heritage and life, when confronted with the photographer he feels dissatisfied with his life, and his mixed feelings of self-pity and envy show through. However, he has learnt that he is in no position to do anything about his life and unfortunate circumstances, having tried several times, unsuccessfully, to improve his familys living conditions and quality of life. He was brought up in a religious dynasty, and because of the ingrained principles that still linger in his soul, is reluctant to remove the icon of his faith from his property, although his religion (Hinduism?) has offered no respite to his suffering. His tranquil eyes reflect his resigned state of mind, and the calm hopelessness that has embedded itself in his being." -- Samuel Dilworth

To those who see "exotic" photos as harmless: the above should make clear why they are not.

An "exotic" photo is merely a deliberate perpetuation of existing stereotypes in the Western viewer's mind.

As I scrolled down the POW thumbnails, i softly whispered Varanasi even before seeing the title on the image. The picture has managed to capture all of the characteristic elements that Banaras is known by to the outside world. And having lived there, I know it is a big deal to take a portrait on the ghats. There's more than the picture though to the world's oldest living city.
