Guest Guest Posted November 17, 2007 Well, this is a good example of a very effective photo. However, the effectiveness comes from her beauty rather than photographic merit. Sort of - no way to fail subject. The key here is obviously her face, pretty much everything else is no-motif. Lovely, lovely face. Link to comment
raymondlam 0 Posted November 17, 2007 Hi Juha, Can you tell me or show me what you can do with a situation like this, 200 plus photographers surrounded the subject inside a mall outside a shop with no lightings or set up, shot with ambient lightings,10 minutes for each subject, what kind of motif you can come up with? This is not a studio nor a set up shot, this is kind of a on the run shot or snap shot. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted November 18, 2007 Raymond, given the situation boundaries, there is very little you can do but to record what you have in front of you. In a situation like this you just keep shooting, try to vary what ever you can and finally you just hope that one photo tops the others. Notice that the photograph does work, but the fact is, it works because she is so marvelously beautiful in face. When you look at the photo there is very little else you notice except her face. It's not your fault it's not your credit. It's just one of those moments where your input is rather ... insignificant. The claim does not have anything to do with your shooting skills. Had I shot it, it would still be the same. Had Avedon shot it, it'd still be the same claim. Link to comment
neilpeters 0 Posted December 28, 2007 that is an interesting, and valid viewpoint that under the certain circumstances one could see more journalistic measures than personal art. and that different photographers would end up with nearly the same results. that makes perfect sense to me, it's logical. however, from my humble perspective, after seeing it in context with Raymond's other work and vision, I see a stunning portrait, beautifully composed, nicely lit with excellent color depth that few other photographers could achieve, from any level of expertise. you and I could view the same sunset, standing next to each other, and I would wonder what Raymond saw. now I know. he sees the whole picture. raymondlam 0 Posted December 28, 2007 Neil, thank you! Its just a lucky shot as it did not have any lightings put up and only had 10 minutes for each contestant. By looking at your portfolio, I think you have a far better vision than me. If we are in a same scene, I bet you will see more than I do, you are a great photographer. Link to comment
