It was so cold that the morning fog froze on all the plants in the foreground covering them with a shimmering white glow. But, as the sun rose, this quickly evaporated along with the fog.

This particular photograph was made at the end of a photographic excursion that I set out upon the last week of October. I motored through Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and finally back to my home state of Ohio. During my journey I kept my eye open for a good early morning photo-op. I am an infamous sleepyhead and not at all an early riser, but on this morning I made an exception and caught this one.

All that detail in the foreground is marvellous! Is like a giant jewellery piece... Beautiful colors and a lovely sky. I like it very much. Best regards.

Beautiful indeed with gorgeous light, Walter! I especially love the details in the foreground... those details make this image special!

Thanks Sean, I always welcome your view. And thank you, too, Brad. If you like the detail in this, Brad, you should see the one that I shot with my 4x5; it is absolutely amazing, but the sky did not turn out as well as this one. I still have to work on that. Regards.

WOW Rajeev! You always seem to pop-up when I don't expect you. It is just like the good old days when you're around. Thank you so much for the visit and rate; I have always admired your photographs. Lennart, thank you for the kind comment. Regards.

I am sure you never regret rising early for this. The cool tones of the fg ia such a good contrast against the warm tones of the horizon. The 6 stalks of sihoulette plant breaks the monotony of the photo & provide good balance overall. I ahve always admired your landscapes.

Walter, this was worth getting up early. You managed to tame the brightness of the sky with the ND grad without an obvious transition. The details must look even better on the large print. Long life to Velvia ! Best regards. Peter

Many thanks to Cherlyn, Peter, Birger, and Tom for stopping by! Regarding the NDG filter, Peter, the transition is still there though, but as you mentioned, not too obvious (upper stems of the thistles need to be brighter). It was a little difficult to position it so I shot 10 frames on this scene over a period of five minutes; some portrait, some landscape orientations. This one was originally a landscape that I cropped square. I have a couple of vertical frames in which the sky is really outstanding but the foreground was reduced to much, and I wanted to concentrate on the foreground. The above is probably the best compromise from that roll. Regards.

Walter, now that you indicated, I can see the difference, but it is really slight. The stalks are darker only in the area where they stand against the sky, so my eye finds their silhouette appearance quite natural. It was a good compromise, I think there was little you could have done to make this shot better. Flash to brighten up the thistles would probably overexpose and cast shadows within frozen plants.

If you can do this type of wonder every time you get up early, damn you if you go on sleeping !! More seriously this is absolutely fantastic. The details in the foreground and the building up of shivering coldness make the chock of the warm colours of the sunrise a real emotion. Bravo !

As the PhotoNet sun is starting to set on this photograph I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who has visited here, incuding most recently Maria, Spence, Mike, and Anders. I single out Spence (God bless you) because he was the first visitor when I first submitted this. Thanks again.

Anders, I am investing in a new and LOUDER alarm clock ;0) Regards.

Dang Walt! Very nice. The fall colors this year were all messed up, weren't they? We went to the NY finger lakes area one month ago and everything was still green. I'm telling you this because I just love what you've done with this for a fall 'beaut' without the normal flashy colors... Very well done.
