petemillis 0 Posted November 2, 2007 Shot using 4 second exposure and rotating camera while moving toward keyboard (in similar way to Gordon Bowbrick's leaf). Idea being to create a warped painting effect. No post proc. Link to comment
dseltzer 0 Posted November 3, 2007 I certainly wouldn't have guessed the subject here, but no matter, it's an inviting and intriguing image. I'm sure Gordon will be flattered and impressed! And I gotta tell you, probably thanks to seeing way too many medical/scientific images, this really reminds me of a photomicrograph of chromosomes. Silliness and other things aside, I really like the textures, light and forms here, and there's a wonderful feeling of depth, too. Keep experimenting! Regards, David Link to comment
petemillis 0 Posted November 3, 2007 David, thank you very much for commenting on this. Now you mention chromosomes I see the resemblance too and I'm having flashbacks to various modules of my degree course! This was just another of those fun to take photographs. I have a MIDI keyboard sitting on my computer desk and it's one of those nice "touchy feely" objects that is handy for experimentation. Cheers again. Pete Link to comment
gordonjb 10,860 Posted November 4, 2007 Very cool abstract. It looks like Bugs Bunnies teeth underneath Charlie Chaplin's moustache. I had a friend from the big city up over the weekend and did a third trip up to Killarney so took a few more rotate and descend shots when I was out. Since my friend did the driving also got off a few drive-by shots. Interesting how your rotation served to stretch and slightly bend the keys as opposed to mine which turned the entire image into a vortex. I always find it fun to first invent a technique and then figure out all the subjects that would seem good candidates as fodder. This works well with the keyboard. It may be interesting to see if raising contrast would bring up the dark lines from the spaces between the keys as those lines look pretty interesting the way they have been distorted. petemillis 0 Posted November 4, 2007 I see what you mean about teeth and tache! I've tried a bit adjusting the contrast to bring the lines out more but it isn't working. It's too far gone. I can make them a bit clearer by converting to BW and applying a filter, but I quite like the colour of this. When I rotated the camera I basically rotated about 45 degrees left/right/left/right/left/right/left/right during the 4 sec exposure. It is this that has left the image curved in this way rather than completely swirly. Just for fun, I applied the same process in a photograph that I took of a photograph on my monitor. See below....can you guess what the picture on the monitor is? Link to comment
gordonjb 10,860 Posted November 5, 2007 Now I understand -- the left , right and back again explains the distortion, and yeah I'm pretty sure I do recognise that shot as your keyboard shot ( changed my mind from my first guess ) ? Interesting effect happens with the edges of the papers. Something you can use to advantage with these motion shots is the relative speed at which different colours and tones register on the sensor. dseltzer 0 Posted December 2, 2007 Art? Most certainly! That's especially true for the next iteration of 'piano meets twist-a-whirl' that's brought the boarder of the monitor very much into play. Each stands on its own, and the feeling's are very different for each. The pic you took of the monitor displaying the first image, is really a fine shot on it's own. You must have rock steady hands to get the image consistency and uniformity of exposure that you did! Really interesting stuff! Regards, David Link to comment
