This is an awesome photo. Up close it looks like a pencil drawing. The contrast and composition are both great too. It's creepy and cool. I like it.

This is definitely one of the best self-portraits I've seen out there; obviously you know that rules were made to be broken, they're great guidelines or learning tools but not to be followed every time, and certainly you've managed to achieve something unique by trying a different approach. The picture is outstanding, I see no flaw in the composition, and the tonal values are great. Congratulations!

I have always been of the belief that first a person should learn the rules, then the rules should be practised until they are fully understood and after that has been done the rules should all be broken! Thanks for the endorsement I never know how these experiments will be received.

I completely agree; Picasso knew how to draw before he created cubism. Now you've made me want to see more of your work. Cheers!

I've been trying to taking a tour of your portfolio. For some reason the site is very slow tonight so I'll come back tomorrow.

Gordon, Yes I'm here ...;-)) what a portrait!, it is really part of you, Ha ...) I must say that my first impression was " The big brother is looking at us", kind of a political subject and critique, with that magnifying glass? and bizarre form(it looks also like glasses, maybe it is, or not,) that was my first association.... Observing it more, I saw it as well with a hint of humor, looking at the world around you with a magnifyng glass , laughing under your moustach....( It looks you have one ;-)). Was it cropped from a bigger frame? it looks quite grainy, but it works well here. The light and B/W rendition are good as your semi circled hair and beard? are like a frame to the upper face profile. I think that it is an original appreach, and well cropped and executed.

Absolutely fu.... awesome as a previous poster said! This self portrait - it's scary...you look exactly how I see my supervisor at uni when he calls me into his office!

I'd say you've really hit the spot with the amount of zooming here as it's given the desired effect without losing too much detail around the edges. Yer glasses really add an extra dimension - it's at time like this I wish I wore glasses instead of contact lenses - I'm jealous!

Joseph, good to hear from you, I'm glad you like this one and you'll get no arguments from me about the certifiable remark.

Pnina, Yes this really is me, the image was not cropped very much, I added the grain after the fact. I had originally shot a series of self portraits with the intention of using them for my attempts to emulate the effect of using a Holga plastic camera. I added the grain to try and give the effect of pushing the development of Tri X film. Somewhere along the way I abandoned this image in favour of another from the same shoot, which I'm still working on. I did have that, looking out of a fish bowl feeling, when I first saw this image.

Pete, your boss must be scary if he looks like this! I usually take my glasses off when I'm in front of the camera. I am going to get some contact lenses myself soon. I just got my scuba certification and you can't wear glasses under a mask and I quickly grew weary of bumping into stuff underwater.

Micki, I'd have to see you in a beard before I knew if you looked good in one !

John, I hope your right, I think you are?

Micki, I suspect they are telling the truth about you looking good in anything, the rest of your comment I'm not going anywhere near.

Mary, thanks I'm glad this image spoke to you.

First, I'll confess right off that I usually comment prior to reading other critiques. I want to give my response unaltered by previous reactions.

Oh my goodness!

Funny, scary, delightful! I love the white space above, the eye... well this photo will send paranoid schizophrenics screaming into the night.

I like it!
