competing against thousands of shots taken there, but in better light. Near noon is not a good idea for a landscape photo. Get up earlier or be there later and you will win. First or latest hour of daylight is best.

I myself wouldn't be so afraid of the sun. I like the shadows and I also like the bright tones of the ground as it contrasts nicely with the hills and the stark trees. Very nice!

Eyecatching = stark trees against the red desert, you have the start of an implied line with the trees but the first trunk is almost centred. I feel that the lines could be emphasised more.
