I had to shoot the merry go round for a brochure for the city. The

problem was there never was more than 2 kids at a time on it. So I

Took my trusty models (my kids) and shot at slow speed. I would like

critique on the shot but more specifcally what else I could have done

in this situation.

I agree with John. The horse's eye is really great here... Was that PS ? I can't really imagine this executed on camera, as you would have need to hit the horse alone with the flash wile having a slow exposure, and that requires an off camera flashgun...? Or would it be some quite incredible panning ?

No matter what, it really makes the shot for me. Colors are nice too. Again, your levels haven't been adjusted really properly, but it's roughly ok here. I still think that you should really get use to respect your images more than you seem to, as far as post-production is concerned. The envelop matters almost as much as it contains in marketing...:-)

Anyway, good job here. Your best upload so far in this circle imo. Regards.

Beleive it or not I didn't use photoshop for anything in this. I had on camera flash and it was hand held. I have done a lot of motorcycle and mountain bike races where I would do this panning technique so I guess I've had enough practice.

I really need to learn how to adjust my levels properly in Photoshop though.

Thanks for the comments

hi chris,

really nice work here. how did the front of the horse stay sharp while the back is blurred?

the only thing i might suggest as far as THIS photo is that it might be nice to see the horse's legs and less headroom.

as far as other ideas for the assignment; i guess my first thought would be, do there HAVE to be kids on the merry-go-round? it all depends on the goal and i can imagine very well that the answer was yes. but if not, i love images of empty rides where color, form and motion are the focus.

I think the children complete the merry-go-round, but not so much that they needed to be unblurred. I love the fact that the horse's head and neck are the only (somewhat) detailed elements of the shot. My one proposal for improvement, something in this shot calls to me for warmer light.

Like the image Chris, the horse's head is really well captured and is worth a smile for me. Effective technique to capture this so well. Colours are really good also. Since the colours of the horse look so well, perhaps you could have captured the horse and your kids without the motion blur. I am saying this because some of your other photographs of kids capture great fun in there expressions. That's all I can think aas an alternative to what you did. However, I like the fact that you showed inventiveness in the photograph you submitted.

Really good work Chris and while it has all been said above I have to say the horses head and the determined look in its eye is the strength in this shot. The only other idea for the shot that I might have and it's a bit of a ham and egg routine. Have the mother on a horse behind the childs as if she is chasing the child as mothers and fathers often have to (chase their children). This would be a real production and require a lot of planning and testing but maybe worth it. Anyway, love the shot as it is. Brad
