I prefer a lower viewpoint and I think the sun was in your face so your camera had a problem with the exposure.

You are absolutely right on both counts. I too prefer a lower viewpoint. There is another shot of this bird in my portfolio that is a bit lower. And yes full sun, such a challenge.
