I am trying to build a portfolio worthy of providing a foot hold in

the doorway that is commercial photography, all critiques are welcome

and any advice for future progression is welcome.

this image was taken at 3 am in the middle of a storm, with a 10

second exposure 90 mm lens at 100 iso f 4 (i think)

Your first published...congrats. Where was it published? I like the composition. The horizontal lines at left center are a little distracting. What are they?

Cheers.

Hi Bill,

I live right up the road from you in Auburn KY, so I've seen this city many times. This is a great shot. There are a couple of things that bother me with it though. The rail in the bottom left is one. Now that I noticed it, my eyes go right to it everytime that I look at the photo. Also I think there is just a slight bit too much dead space at the top. I would rather see the attention on Riverfront or the street above instead of the sky. Also, I'm not familiar with film, but I think that a boost in contrast really makes this pop. I think it's a great photo as is, with a few little compositional changes this is immaculate. I love cityscapes at night. I've been meaning to get down to Nashville and spend some time shooting. I really want to shoot the bridge that you are standing on here, or the stadium at night. Take care and welcome to photo.net!

I agree with Kelly. I would frame the shot more tightly to cut out some of the sky. Not only is there not much going on at the top, but the light pollution in the sky isn't overly attractive, and the city and waterfront are beautiful, so I'd like to see the focus directed there. Nice photo.

This is a lovely scene - some of the lights are a little blown out - you may get a better result if you reduced the time exposure slightly. The reciprocity failure rate is very hard to predict from one film to another - maybe bracketing will give you a better idea of required exposure time.

thank you all so much. to answer questions, this image was shot specifically to be placed on the cover of the verizon phone book in nashville. I recieved the gig at 8 pm and it was due at 8am the next day. The lines to the left are powerlines. the rail is in the picture in this one, due to a position requirement. although i agree i could have done better. (bellsouth is writen on the building and cant be on the cover of a verizon phone book) the final was cleaned up (cropped down and cloned powerlines out and boosted a bit) the sky is a bit open (the purpose was room for copy and because of that blasted railing) but when i got the pictures back i was still dissappointed. and as to blown out lights, apparently i need to and will play with exposure. now i just need to see if i can reproduce this image a bit cleaner and with a better vantage point. i probably could have done better on composition. so now i have a goal. again thank you all for your input
